Attenuation in optical fibers is caused by several mechanisms:
1. Bending loss occurs when tight bends in the fiber cause light to leak out of the core. It affects higher-order modes more than lower-order modes.
2. Absorption loss is due to the excitation of molecular vibrations by the optical signal. In silica fibers, overtones of Si-O and OH bonds contribute to loss peaks.
3. Scattering loss results from index variations in the fiber on the scale of the wavelength. Rayleigh scattering is the dominant source of intrinsic loss in silica fibers.
