Case Study

Andrew N.
By: Kaitlin Graff, Meaghan Bosch, & Jessica Del Latto
Based on his interests

Word Cloud For the technology aspect we had him input his own information.
Infographic

Andrew is an Auditory Learner

Logical Math 81%

Linguistic 25%

The findings from both the Learning Styles

and Multiple Intelligence tests make

sense for Andrews areas of strengths

and weaknesses.
Background Information

Andrew just completed 2nd grade at St.

Agnes Elementary School in Rockville Centre.

He has an older brother and a younger

brother

Does not have a special education

classification but does receive reading
support in school.
Interests
Favorite colors are pink and purple!

Loves baseball and his favorite team is Yankees

Likes painting and science in school

His favorite foods included steak and rainbow ices

Spending time with his dogs Rosie and Rocco

Learning Needs (weaknesses)
Needs to be engaged in lessons either in a physical or mental way

Math adding, subtracting, comparing, skip counting, 3D shapes, rounding,

graphing

ELA story skills (main idea, inference), interpreting graphs, base words,
prefix/suffix, synonyms, antonyms
Academic Strengths
Math He showed overall strength in all areas of Math,
he is able to add large numbers in his head, he could plot
a graph, and excelled at multiplication tables.

ELA He showed some growth from the first session

to the last with his reading ability. He started sounding
words out and slowing down while reading. Sight words if
known already were easier for him, but after
introduction of new words he remembered them.
Data Analysis
Pre-Test - 40%

Post-Test - 100%
Lesson 1
Slime

Skip Counting

Roll die then go to lockers even odd

Lesson 1: Results/Findings
Kinesthetic

Motivation to keep returning to the tutoring program

Reading directions out loud-->saw weakness

Ex: He had trouble with certain words slime, tablespoon

Skip Counting was easy for him

Lesson 2
Math Measuring foot and objects around him in the hallway

ELA memory game with sight words

Lesson 2: Results/Findings
Math - At the end of the session, Andrew was able
to measure the heights of different objects around
him in the hallway with very little help.

ELA - At the end of the session, Andrew was asked

to read through the vocabulary words again and was
able to complete the list with no decoding errors.
Lesson 3
Math Graph

ELA-->Rainforest
Reading

Words Andrew
struggled with during
the reading included:
Lesson 3: Results/Findings
Math -> Andrew was able to complete a bar graph of

the heights of the objects around him in the hallway. He

needed some prompting on what went on each axis.

ELA -> To help Andrew slow his reading pace down we

encouraged him to finger point to the words he was

reading. We also helped him to break up words he had

trouble reading. His second try of reading the passage

improved and he was able to answer the comprehension

questions with 100% accuracy.

Lesson 4
MULTIPLICATION TWISTER!!!!

To help Andrew and Antonio

not only get a jump start on
the multiplication tables but to
also master fact families and
skip counting.
Lesson 4: Results/Findings
Both Andrew and Antonio were successful in skip
counting to solve the multiplication problems.

Both boys loved getting twisted up and figuring

the problems out.

During the pretest Andrew missed 4 out of the 10

questions presented to him, but after getting all
twisted up in Multiplication Twister Andrew scored
100% on that test again during post-testing.
Conclusion

AS a whole we enjoyed working with ANdrew to help his develop his Math
and ELA skills. He is a hardworking, kind, and intelligent young boy that
if pushed the right way will develop the ability to read at level and excel
in both Math and ELA.
Recommendations
For those working with Andrew implement and
incorporate kinesthetic, game-like activities, and
incorporate the color pink to help keep him
motivated and interested.
