1. Introduction
What is Performance?
Expectations regarding the amount of damage a building
may experience due the specified earthquake hazard.

How it is expressed?
Expressed in terms of series of discrete performance
levels identified as Operational , Immediate Occupancy,
Life Safety, Collapse Prevention

How it is measured?
Measured in terms of probability of incurring casualties,
repair and replacement cost and repair time
2. Objectives
The objectives of the research work includes
To assess the probable performance of the
building;
To design seismic upgrades for the building to
improve their performance.
3. Scope
limited to consideration of consequences that
occur within the occupied building envelope
and the assessment outside the building
envelope is beyond the scope of this effort.
4. Literature Review

5.0 Methodology
5.1 Assemble Building Performance
Model
It is an organized collection of data necessary
to define building assets that are at risk and
vulnerable to the effects of earthquake
shaking. The building performance model
includes
Population Model-peak population, population pattern
Fragility Groups-vulnerable structural components,
nonstructural components, and contents are
categorized
Performance Groups
5.2 Define Earthquake Hazard
defined in terms of earthquake shaking which
is characterized by target acceleration
response spectra
For intensity-based assessments, ground
shaking intensity can be represented by any
user-defined acceleration response spectrum
(e.g., a code design spectrum)
5.3 Analyze Building Response
Structural analysis is used to evaluate building
response to earthquake shaking and produce
estimated median values of structural
response parameters that are predictive of
structural and nonstructural damage.
Key response parameters include floor
accelerations, floor velocities, story drift
ratios, and residual drift ratios.
NonLinear Response History Analysis
assess performance of any structure at any
ground shaking intensity
generate sets of demands, such as story drift
ratios, floor accelerations, and floor velocities,
which are predictive of performance
Modelling
Buildings modeled, analyzed, and assessed as
three-dimensional assemblies of components
All structural framing and nonstructural
components that contribute significantly to
the strength or stiffness of the building
included in the analytical model.
5.4 Develop Collapse fragility
Building collapse -associated with local or
global loss of vertical load carrying capacity, or
failure of the gravity-load carrying system.
Collapse Fragility-relationship that defines the
probability of incurring structural collapse as a
function of ground motion intensity
5.5 Calculate Performance
a companion Performance Assessment
Calculation Tool (PACT) will be used to
perform repetitive calculations and manage
data.
Flowchart for performance assessment
Flowchart for intensity- and scenario-
based assessments.
6.0 Expected Results
Simulated demands, assessment of collapses
Probable damages in the building due the
future earthquake
losses in the form of casualties, repair cost,
and repair time
