ROUND-1

1
When Rabindranath Tagore saw young X's performance in early
thirties he wrote an appreciation on the dancer:

X is a real artist and I am sure there are not many who could
rightfully take their stand by his side either in India or abroad. He
brought to my mind glimpses of the great past when dancing was
one of the most treasured arts in India and not as today, a mere
device of whetting up the jaded appetite of the idle rich. His
presence in our midst was a great lesson and now that dancing is
again coming into vogue amongst us, his style should give us a
correct lead, for in want of it, we are yet groping in the dark.

The Rabindra Bharathi University honoured X with a doctorate. Xs

statue was erected in Viswa Bharathi University.

X also acted in Malayalam movie Y which is known as the first

Mythological movie in Malayalam. Id X and Y

It all began here. Three-and-a-half minutes into In Which Annie

Gives It Those Ones, a young man in a white robe and shorts,
with centre-parted hair and his arm in a sling, gets about 30
seconds of screen time and a couple of lines. The actor
reappears 15 minutes later, this time in blue-and-white polka-
dotted pants, and talks about piddling. Its difficult to imagine
that this unprepossessing person still has a job as an actor, let
alone that hes X. These two brief scenes in Pradip Krishens film,
written by Ywhich never made it to theatreswere his first big

Rajendra Kumar in Aman (1967)!

X was strongly in favour of nuclear disarmament, so it

makes thematic sense that he would turn up as himself in

It is a common misconception that X was born in
Andhra Pradesh .
"I was born in Chengalpattu, she reveals, I used to
have a house in Chennai and agricultural land in the
Red Hills area. So, why the widespread belief that she
was born in Hyderabad? It's a long story, she says,
When I was in Chennai, I did three to four Telugu
movies. In the first one, Rojulu Maraayi, I did only a
folk dance number. However, it went on to become
a hit! I was in Hyderabad celebrating its success and
Guru Dutt happened to be there. He was on a
lookout for new faces and heard that I could speak in
Urdu. It is because he spotted me in Hyderabad that
people assume I was born there.
