According to Riggs,
The overall objective of plant
layout is to design a physical arrangement
that most economically meets the required
output quantity and quality.
1. PRODUCT Layout (size, shape and quality)
2. PROCESS Layout (technology employed,
sequencing etc)
3.Fixed position Layout (tools ,buildings etc)
fixed position layout :
This type of the layout recommended for low
volume production where product movement is
not feasible during the processing due to shape
volume .
In fixed position layout product remains fix at
one point and tools are brought for the
operation.
Assembly of the ships required fixed position
layout.
Process Layout :
In this Layout machines are group on the
basis of function
machines are group on the basis of the
function
It is suitable where the product lot sizes are
small
Product Layout : In manufacturing
engineering, a product layout refers to a
production system where the work stations
and equipment are located along the line of
production, as with assembly lines.
I. Manufacturing lead time is very small
II. Machines are design for the specific product
III. This type of layout is inflexible and cannot
accommodate variety of products
IV. But the product variety within the operation
sequence and operation is possible
Material Movement :
Space should be provided for the
movement of material handling
equipment for the movement of raw
material or semi-finished parts
Space for the operator :
Space between the adjacent machines
sufficient so that the worker can move
easily
Space for the repair and maintenance :
Adequate space should be provided for the
maintenance
Space for the temporary storage of parts:
storage bins are required for the materials and
parts
Space for Loading and unloading of parts :
some machine have the specific space
requirement for loading the parts and materials
Maximize the use of the workspace:
It is important that work space should be
used efficiently
Machine catalogues should be consulted
to make the 3-D models
Each work place required the specific type of
the utilities:
It includes the electricity , gas, water, fuel
and exhaust ducts , ventilation and air
conditioning ducts etc.
The utilities may be installed along the walls
or in the concealed channels under the floor
The overhead piping should be the 7 feet
above the floor
Idler roller conveyors : This type of the
conveyors is used for the unit load handling
between the workstation with short distance
Live or Power roller: Where the unit load
are to be moved over the longer distances
live rollers are used It is driven at uniform
speed
Belt Conveyors : The belt conveyors are
used for the handling of bulk load
Suspensions conveyors : There are two main
types of suspensions conveyors , chain and hook
type and rope trolley type. Hook and chain type
conveyors are used for the unit loads as in
painting line of motorcycle
Spiral conveyors :It is used to move materials at
low speed in a confined space as in soap drying
ovens It is used in pharmaceutical companies
where large quantity but small size unit loads are
to be moved
Pneumatic Conveyors :
It is used where the low density bulk material
movement is required .
In textile mills pneumatic conveyors are used
It is also separate the high density impurities
from low solid density
Lifts : It is used in multilevel plants for
moving men and unit load in vertical direction
Trucks and trolleys :
production centers with the process
layout use a large variety of manual and
power driven truck and trolleys. They
are flexible in operation and can be used
over a wide range.
Lifts and trucks :
Lift and truck with variety of capacities
and lift the height ranges are used
widely for handling loads
Hoists and cranes: It is used for
the vertical and the horizontal motion of
the heavy unit load .They find extensive
application in shipping sites
I. The operation of the equipment may generate
unhealthy pollutants such as the hot gases toxic fumes
and high level of noise
II. Machines should be isolated so the proper ventilation is
provided
III. Workers should provide the masks to prevent the health
hazard
IV. Adequate lightening is required
V. It is economical to provide local light sources
VI. Periodic cleaning of the illumination is required
VII. Glare effect of illumination should be minimized
because it effect the vision
VIII. Use the diffused sun light through glazing in the roofs
that can reduce the electricity bills
