Assessment of water pollution induced by human activities in Bullurus lake using
Landsat 8 and GIS
Overview

Project methodology
Introduction

Pulicat lake is the second largest brackish water lake in India.

Across two states Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Area: 450 km2 (High tide) and 250 km2 (Low tide).
Comparable to Bellurus lake(460 km2) also a brackish water
lake.
Pulicat
lake: Fishing , Bird sanctuaries , Water for North
Chennai power station etc.
Objective

Obtain key water quality parameters using remote sensing

techniques.
Spatialdistribution of these water quality parameters using
GIS techniques.
Try to Identify the reasons for the observed distribution.
Project Methodology
Landsat 8 image acquired from EarthExplorer website.

Preprocessing : Radiometric calibration, Atmospheric correction (Exelis ENVI software)

Project Methodology

Vector shape file of lake.

Used to crop the lake out of the full image.

Statistics of Burullus lake

Compared to Burullus lake all parameters are smaller.
TN values are negligible compared to Burullus lake.
Pulicat lake is far less polluted compared to Burullus lake.
Discussion

High pollution concentration zone is mainly found where

the lake meats the Bay of Bengal.
There
may be errors due to other chemical components in
sea water.
Thehigh pollution in this zone might also be due to its
proximity to Chennai(Urban area.)
