FAMILY CARE PROGRAM
Texas Baptist Childrens Home is a Christian-based system for women and

children of need to become better equipped and empowered for a more

promising future. The community is made up of people from all backgrounds and

different stories, whether it be for substance abuse recovery, fleeing physically

abusive situations, assistance due to low-income, and others. Services include

both residential and non-residential programs: Campus Life, Family Care, and

Chapel. The program provides many tools and resources to help women make

better choices, educating them along the way. To start, they practice daily

chores and schedules including certain wake up times, cleaning, breakfast,

lunch, and every night they take turns making dinner for the house. They put a

big emphasis on life skills such as meal planning, compiling a grocery list and

EXTRA CURRICULARS
The group also does things together like going to the gym (either on site or locally) and

practicing yoga. TBCH works hard to encompass both clinical and homeopathic

strategies, a whole body approach, to recovery when needed. Their goals, when dealing

with substance abuse residents, is to get them in once they are clean and teach them

how to actually function in society, dealing with emotions and urges/cravings to avoid

relapse and help them progress. Adults either need to be actively looking for jobs or

already employed, while children are required to be enrolled in school upon successful

discharge of the program. They should also be able to demonstrate they have a firm

grasp on the clinical concepts taught during their stay. Sundays are for family visits,

allowing loved ones to come for the day to work on participating in community functions

and help build positive relationships, spreading their faith and sharing their improved

lifestyle. IMAGE 2: Community 23

CONCEPT STATEMENT
This formal transitional housing will be bright and airy. Emphasis on
the historic charm of the original building will be repeated in the
curvy lines that make up the traditional Queen Anne furniture
throughout the complex and helps to create an almost whimsical
fashion that will allow its users to relax and unwind while still
remaining true to its origins. The entire space is to be balanced
between open and secure with a strong focus on communal spaces
in the entry/front half of the building and privacy in the back half
where residents will have their own tucked away residences. An
open concept at the entry, welcomes all, especially the residents
and their visitors, and promotes community and building
relationships through group activities. The private housing along
the back will provide a safe haven for people, giving them the
comfort and sense of home they need. Soft and delicate features,
including floral patterns on upholstery or wall finishes and tinted
hues, will provide an upscale design for a positive and established
reflection with a clear sense of value and worth.

JUSTIFICATION
The color within this space contains tinted hues that are mostly muted with a

pop of rich colors in the split-complementary scheme to help the inhabitants

remain focused without vibrant distractions and surroundings. The dominant

texture throughout is subtle, yet coarse that is balanced by smooth and shiny

finishes that are deep in color. The scale is average, which leaves the property

open, airy, and welcoming, while also being accessible universally. The amount

of natural lighting reflects off the furnishings and finishes to help illuminate the

space without hurting the eyes.

This combination of design elements brings a healthy balance in both formal and

casual environment that is typical of the Queen Anne style and helps the

residents feel comfortable, safe, and confident as they work through improving
