Describe effective facilitators


characteristics to ensure successful
group counselling. Explain briefly
the limitations a facilitator may face
during the session.

EFFECTIVE FACILITATORS
CHARACTERISTICS
1. Good listener
- listen very carefully and really hear what is
being said in order to connect with group
members.
- encourage others to listen when their
friends speak.
2. Genuineness
- indicates what you do and say is congruent
with what is going on inside you.
- must behave without pretence.
3. Respect
- value the members opinions, ideas, hopes,
and feelings.
- responsibility to see that members show
respect for each other.

4. Warmth and caring


- experienced through non verbal
behaviours that tend to stimulate similar
responses.
Example:
- posture
- facial expressions (smiling)
- tone of voice (modulated)
- eye contact
5. Knowledgeable of group members behaviours
- have some familiarity with past experience
as a group leader.
- very useful to understand how people
behave in groups.

6. Willing to work towards the groups goals.


- enthusiastic about the goals of the group
and quite willing to work for their
accomplishment.
- see themselves as a part of a team and
emotionally & physically committed.
7. Have the ability to initiate activity
- seek to develop shared responsibility and
leadership for the group.
- When no one else is capable, willing to do
what needs to be done.

8. Encourage members to identify / evaluate


alternatives for themselves
- provide a process by which members
explore options and alternatives & they offer
their support.
- each member is encouraged to examine
problem solving strategies for themselves.
LIMITATIONS A FACILITATOR
MAY FACE DURING THE
SESSION
Unwanted behaviours emerge.

Negativity, resistance and avoidance for


views of others may arise.

Much lies on the shoulders of the


counselor.
(Facilitator has to check out unwanted
behaviours and see proper flow of
Difficulties in self disclosure, checking
hostilities and decision making may arise

Extrovert participants may dominate

Size of the group may arise. (should not


be too large and too small)
