The variables x and y are connected by the equation 2x 3y=2. some values of
x and the corresponding values of y are given in the table.

2.4 Solving Simultaneous Linear Equations
Using Algebraic Methods
Elimination Method
The elimination method is usually used when the absolute values of the
coefficients of one variable in both the equations are the same.
Worked Example 3
Using the elimination method, solve the simultaneous equations
3 + 7 = 17
3 6 = 4
Solution:
Check:
3 + 7 = 17 ...............(1) 1
Substitute = 3 and y =1 into (1) and (2):
3 6 = 4 ..........(2) 3

In (1), LHS = 3(3 )+7(1)

Substitute y = 1 into (1): 1

It is sometimes necessary to manipulate one of the equations before we can
eliminate a variable by addition or subtraction.

Using the elimination method, solve the simultaneous equations
3 + 2 = 8

Substitution Method
Rearrange one equation to express one variable in terms of the other
variable. Next, substitute the expression into the other equation to obtain an
equation in only one variable.

Using the substitution method, solve the simultaneous equations

Solution: Substitute x = 9 into (3):
From (2), = 57 4 (3) = 57 4(9)
Substitute (3) to (1): = 57 36

2.5 Applications of Simultaneous Equations in
Real-World Contexts
Worked Example 10
The sum of two numbers is 67 and their difference is 3. Find the two numbers.
Solution:
Let the smaller number be x and the greater number be y.
+ = 67 (1)
= 3 (2) +
2 = 70
= 35
Substitute y = 35 into (1):
+ 35 = 67
= 32
The two numbers are 32 and 35

Worked Example 11
The sum of the ages of Jun Wei and his mother is 60. Two years ago, Jun Weis
mother was three times as old as Jun Wei. Calculate
(i) Jun Weis present age
(ii) The age of Jun Weis mother when he was born.
Solution:
i. Let the age of Jun Weis mother be x years and Jun Wei be y years. Then two
years ago, Jun Weis mother was (x 2) years old and Jun Wei was (y 2) years
old.

From (2), 2 = 3 6

Substitute (3) into (1): 3 4 + = 60
4 = 64
= 16 Jun Weis present age = 16 years

Worked Example 13
The sum of the digits of a two digit number is 8. When the digits of the number are
reserved and the number is subtracted from the original number, the result obtained is
18. Find the original number.
Solution:
Let the tens digit of the original number be x and its ones digit be y.
Then the original number is 10x + y, the number obtained when the digits of the
original number are reserved is 10y + x.

10 + 10 + = 18 ... (2)
From (2), 10 + 10 = 18
9 9 = 18
= 2 (divide by 9 throughout).(3)
(1) + (3) : 2 = 10
=5
Substitute x = 5 into (1): 5 + = 8
=3
The original number is 53.
