Introduction

Faults on overhead lines fall into one following

categories:

Transient
Permanent

80-90% of faults on any overhead line network are

transient in nature.

Transient faults are commonly caused by lightning and

temporary contact with foreign objects. The immediate
tripping of one or more circuit breakers clears the fault.
Auto-Recloser

The auto recloser is an protective device that

automatically trips and recloses a preset number of times
to clear temporary faults or isolate permanent faults.

Reclosers are used:

To protect lines, transformer and distribution equipments

from exposing to damage.
Rapid restoration of supply after transient fault
occurrence (Minimize the outage).
Auto-Recloser

Basic operation

When Recloser detects faults its open for a per-

programmed time called dead time before closing
automatically.

Multiple shots (Open and close) can be utilized to clear

transient faults but if the faults is permanent the Recloser
will be eventually in Lockout mode.

Typically Lockout at Shot 3.

Auto-Recloser

Basic operation

The Reclosers designed to perform fast (Instantaneous) or

slow(Time delay) shot according to faults level and
protection setting.

Independent configuration of the time to trip for each

protection operation.

Vacuum interrupter medium provide trouble free service

for long time without requiring any maintenance.
Auto-Recloser

Term And Definitions:

Dead Time
The time between the fault arc being extinguished and
the CB contacts re-making.

De-ionization time
The time required for dispersion of ionized air after a
fault is cleared so that the arc will not re-strike on re-
energisation.

Lock-out
Prevention of a CB reclosing after tripping
Auto-Recloser

Term And Definitions:

Reclaim time
The time between a successful closing operation,
measured from the time the auto-reclose relay closing
contact makes until a further reclosing sequence is
permitted in the event of a further fault occurring.

Sectionalizer

Switching device is designed to be placed downstream of a

recloser.

Its Worthless without recloser upstream of it.

Its cannot open (interrupt) a fault current.

Its counts the faults that have been passed through it and
its programmed to open at dead time period after preset
number of counts.
Sectionalizer

Sectionalizer simplify the job of restoring service

after a fault has been removed since they do
not require replaceable elements - such as fuse links - and
they may be reclosed with a simple hook stick.

Section lazier can break Load Current

Sequence of Operations:
1.Faults current through SEC. > Actuating Current.
2.Dead Line Detected.
3.If 1 And 2 are true
4.The count is start as 1 until its equal preset value
Load Break Switch

A load break switch is a disconnected switch that has been

designed to provide making or breaking of specified
currents.

This is accomplished by addition of equipment that

increases the operating speed of the disconnect switch
blade and the addition of some type of equipment to alter
the arcing phenomena and allow the safe interruption of
the arc resulting when switching load currents.

These disconnect switches can be applied for switching

load or fault currents of the associated equipment.
Load Break Switch

These disconnected switches can be outfitted with an

interrupter medium such (SF6 , Vacuum) capable of
performing interrupting duties.

The Type Used is T200 From Schneider
