Analytic Geometry
CONTENT STANDARDS:
The learners demonstrate an understanding of
key concepts of conic sections.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
The learners shall be able model situations
appropriately and solve problems accurately
using conic sections
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
In this lesson, the students will able to

illustrate different types of conic section: parabola, ellipse,

circle, hyperbola and degenerate cases.
create a model of conic sections using clay.
appreciate the application of conic sections in the real life
situations.
Axis the line that remain fixed

Vertex fixed point

Generator the line that rotates about

the vertex
If the generator rotates about the fixed point,
the surface obtained is Double Right Circular
Cone
The right circular cone has a circular base

Axis is the perpendicular line from the center of

the base to the vertex
Directrix perimeter of the circular base
Nappe lateral surface of the right circular cone
Vertex Angle A the angle between the
generator and the axis
Angle B -the angle between the plane and the axis
Activities
1. Cut the right
circular cone parallel
to the base.
Activities
2. Cut the right circular
cone not parallel or
inclined to the base.
Activities
3. Cut the right
circular cone parallel
to slant height.
Activities
4. Cut the double right
circular cone by cutting
both nappes.
Analysis
1. What is the angle
between the base and the
axis of the cone when the
circle is generated?
Analysis
2. Describe the vertex angle
and angle between the cutting
plane and axis of the cone
when ellipse is generated.
Analysis
3. Describe the vertex angle
and angle between the cutting
plane and axis of the cone
when parabola is generated.
Analysis
4. Describe the vertex angle
and angle between the
cutting plane and axis when
the hyperbola is generated.
Abstraction
1. Circle is produced when the cutting plane is parallel to the base of the cone.
The cutting plane is perpendicular to the axis of the cone

2. Ellipse is produced when the cutting plane is not parallel (or inclined) to the
base of the cone.
A<B
3. Parabola is produced when the cutting plane is parallel to slant height of the
cone.
A=B
4. Hyperbola is produced when the cutting plane intersects both nappes of
double circular cone.
B<A
