INTRODUCTION

VTEC (variable valve timing and electronic control lift) system developed
by honda.
It was invented by honda engineer ikuo kajitani.
It improves the volumetric efficiency of 4 stroke diesel engine.
High performance at high RPM and low fuel consumption at low RPM.
VTEC system uses two cam profile and
electronically select between them
BASIC THEORY

After multivalve technology became standard in engine design

VVT (variable valve timing) next step to enhance engine power and torque
Valve activate the breathing of engine
Shape of cam can control the timing of breathing
At high speed fresh air to be fast enough to enter in combustion chamber
while exhaust has to move out of engine, max combustion can take place
So the solution was open inlet valve earlier and close exhaust valve later in
other words overlapping between intake period and exhaust period
FUNCTIONS

VTEC improves the performance of engine

It improves the volumetric efficiency of the engine by providing excess

amount of air fuel in to engine at high speed.

By regulating valve opening to match engine speed, theVTEC engine

adjusts its characteristics to realize both superior power and low fuel
consumption
Cleaner emission.

Driving comfort.
WORKING

The principle of VTEC is almost simple, elegant and mechanical.

VTEC allows an engine to alternate between two different camshaft
profiles.
In twin-cam configurations, each camshaft features three lobes per
cylinder--its two primary lobes and secondary lobe.
longer-duration secondary lobe--which correspond to three respective
rocker arms
Under normal conditions, the center rocker arm, which is paired to the
camshaft's larger, center VTEC lobe, does little more than ride on what
Honda calls its Lost Motion Assembly
At once the VTEC engauge, though. At a predetermined engine speed
based upon the ECU, a 12V signal is sent to the engine's VTEC solenoid,
which activates the process.
oil pressure forces a series of pins into place, engaging the center rocker
arm, which reacts against the camshafts' larger, center lobes, forcing both
valves to operate under the VTEC lobe's higher-lift, longer-duration profile.
This allow more fuel air mixture enters in to the combustion chamber and
more power develop.
As the speed reduces up to some extent the ECU cut the signal and VTEC
disengage.
TYPES OF VTEC ENGINE

DOHC VTEC (double overhead camshaft system)

SOHC VTEC (single overhead cam shaft system)

3 stage VTEC system

i-VTEC System
VTECH IN MOTORCYCLE

First introduced in 2003 in bikes.

One Intake valve remain closed until the threshold was reached at 7000
rpm.

Second valve open by actuated pin (oil operated ).

Use a single camshaft to operate the two valve.

ADVANTAGES

Better fuel efficiency.

High torque with relevant high power.

Low emission

Strong performance
DISADVANTAGES

Higher cost of engine.

More complex mechanism.

Wear and tear problems.

Decreased engine life.
