INTRODUCTION

This experimental work evaluates the performance of

recycled gypsum plaster with citric acid to improve the
setting times and workability to building components.

Recycled gypsum plaster with five admixture contents

was used: (RGP-0)0%; (RGP-1) 0.025%; (RGP-2)0.05%;
0.1%(RGP-3) and (RGP-4)0.25%.
MATERIALS AND MIXTURES

Gypsum plaster
Gypsum plaster waste
Citric acid

All the specimens had the same water/binder

ratio: 1.0 by weight of gypsum plaster.
METHOD

The mixtures were tested in fresh state:

* Setting
*Consistency

In hardened state after molding, cubic specimens were

molded and cured for seven days in an oven at 40C for
testing

CONCLUSIONS

The use of citric acid as retarding admixture was investigated and based on the
results we can have the following conclusions.
In the fresh state consistency was diminished for all citric acid content but the
values did not reach the CP. Setting times also increased and the good were
reached for 0.1% (RGP-3) and 0.25% (RGP-4) contents of citric acid. The kinetics of
temperature showed the retarding effect of the admixture addition. The maximum
temperatures reached during recycled gypsum plaster hydration were the same.
In the hardened state, compressive strength and hardness were diminished with
increasing citric acid content. The XRD patterns showed complete hydration of
recycled plaster with citric acid addition. SEM showed a significant difference in
crystal formation, which explain the lower mechanical performance.
These results show that the citric acid helps the using of recycled gypsum plaster
to be used as components in buildings with good performance in both fresh and
hardened states.
