Two new types of Diff Zone supervision are available

Id> traditional supervision of differential current level
with settable time delay(i.e. can be used as alarm or for
automatic reset of OCT condition)

REB 670 - Description of calculation
Calculation of instantaneous diff current id is made as a sum of all latest
samples from all N feeders connected to the differential zone
jN

Sum of all latest current samples with positive and negative values are made
(i.e. sum of all currents which flow towards the bus & sum of all current which
flow away from the bus)

48
REB 670 RMS calculation
As the instantaneous values change over time, thus RMS values of of
the incoming, diff and outgoing currents are calculated as well
These are calculated over the last power system cycle (20ms long
moving window for 50Hz system)
Thus values for the last 20 samples are stored in the internal memory
Calculated values of I_IN and ID are displayed as service values
So we now have I_IN, I:_OUT, ID & i_in, i_out, id for the algorithms
They are fed into differential and open CT algorithms
It shall be noted as well that the following relationship exist between
these three quantities:

id=i_in - i_out & ID=I_IN - I_OUT

49
REB 670 - Open CT detection

If a CT is open circuited by human error or some other reason, the diff relay
may mal-operate and trip the whole bus
RED provided with a phase segregated open CT detection algorithm that
does not depend on the number of connected feeders.
Fast operating logic
Logic based on fact that total through load current is the same before and
after the CT is opened( i.e no big changes 3 secs before open CT
detected)
When one of the CT is opened then:
Iin = Iout one cycle before
Iin remains unchanged
Iout drops for more than set Open CT Level
Id goes above set Open CT Level
ABB Power Technologies AB, 2006

Iout+Id=Iin one cycle before (as in step 1 above)

If all the above are validated, open CT declared, trip of that phase blocked
and alarm issued

2006-09-25
50
REB 670 - Open CT detection

Slow operating logic

Detects most abnormalities in the CT secondary circuits or zone
selection logics but with delay of 1000 power system cycles (i.e 20
sec for 50 Hz systems). Logic based on fact that Iin = Iout at normal
load conditions
To prevent operation for low level noise signals, the through load
current must be > 10% of Diff Oper Level parameter
Logic operates when
No big through load current changes during last five seconds
In>>Iout ( i.e. 0.9*Iin>Iout)

If all the above are validated for more than 1000 cycles, open CT
ABB Power Technologies AB, 2006

declared, trip of that phase blocked and alarm issued

Advantages of the Summated Principle

Cost effective solution

Simple summation CTs ordering (1/1A, 2/1A or 5/1A)
ASCT end-connected or series-connected
Main CT ratio mismatch fixed by a parameter setting
Simple scheme engineering

Limitations of the Summated Type

Only one measuring circuit is utilized for all fault types

(i.e. no redundancy for multi-phase faults)
Primary fault sensitivity varies depending on the type of fault and on
the faulty phase
The load currents in the healthy phases might produce the
stabilizing current when an internal, single phase to ground fault
occurs. However this is typically no problem for solidly earthed
systems with high earth-fault currents
No clear indication about faulty phase in case of an internal fault
Not possible to fully utilize Open CT detection feature built-in in
REB 670 terminal

Example:
The minimal differential operating current level in REB 670 terminal is set to 1250A.
All ASCTs are series connected. What is the theoretical primary pickup value in case of L3-Gnd fault?

Answer #1:
According to the Table, pickup coefficient for this type of ASCT connection and this type of fault is 0.578. Therefore:

I Pickup ( L3 Gnd ) 0.578 1250 722.5 A
