„hat Exactly Does the Bible Teach?
Contemporary Glossolalia
(Speaking in Tongues)
Glossolalia =
V (tongue/language) + (to speak)

Glossolalia is the technical term for

³speaking in tongues.´ The Bible speaks
about speaking in tongues. Is the biblical
³tongues´ the same as the contemporary
manifestation in churches, whereby people
speak unintelligible ecstatic utterances?
The
phenomenon of
speaking in
tongues can be
found in virtually
all religions . . .
Alongside other supernatural
actitivities (e.g., healing,
prophecy, trances, noise,
frenzy, etc.) speaking in
tongues can also be found in. ..
--indigenous tribal religions of
Africa (often associated with witch
doctors, fetish priests, voodoo-like
worship styles);
--independent spiritual
churches (in which Christian practices
are combined with elements of
paganism).
Speaking
in tongues
also found
in
Hinduism
˜henomenon
occurs also
in Buddhism
Speaking in tongues is also
found in —oman Catholicism,
alongside Marian apparitions
(appearances of ³virgin
Mary´), miracles, visions,
and prophecies
Even in Mormonism, a
religion, which until recently,
was not considered
authentic Christianity

The glossolalic experience of

³speaking in tongues´ is a
powerful religious
phenomenon in which a real

3 For I say, through the grace that was

not to think of himself more highly than he
ought to think; but to think reasonably, as
God has apportioned to each person a

4 For even as we have many members in

6 Having gifts differing according to the grace

according to the proportion of our faith;
7 or service, let us give ourselves to service; or

gives, let him do it with liberality; he who rules,
with diligence; he who shows mercy, with
cheerfulness.

„hat Exactly Does the Bible Teach?
„hat exactly is
tongues in 1 Cor 14?
--Unintelligible Utterance (Gibberish)? Or
--Supernatural Ability to Speak a Foreign
Language?
Two conflicting interpretations on the nature of
tongues brought forth in 1 Cor 14:

(a)Is tongues unintelligible

ecstatic utterance?
(Pentecostal/Charismatic
position; basis vss. 2, 14)
1 Corinthians 14:2, 14

2 For he that speaketh in an ùun nown]

tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto
God: for no man understandeth ùhim];
howbeit in the spirit he speaketh
mysteries.
14 For if I pray in an ùun nown] tongue, my
spirit prayeth, but my understanding is
unfruitful.
Two conflicting interpretations on the nature of
tongues brought forth in 1 Cor 14:

(b) Is tongues to be the ability to

speak real foreign languages,
hitherto unknown and not learned
by them? (Until recently, this has
been the unanimous position of
traditional Christian churches and
also the Adventist church; basis vv.
6-13, 15-19).
1 Corinthians 14:6-13
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking
with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I
shall speak to you either by revelation, or by
knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
7 And even things without life giving sound,
whether pipe or harp, except they give a
distinction in the sounds, how shall it be
known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who
shall prepare himself to the battle?
1 Corinthians 14:6-13
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue
words easy to be understood, how shall it be
known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into
the air.
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices
in the world, and none of them ùis] without
signification.
11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the
voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a
barbarian, and he that speaketh ùshll be] a
barbarian unto me.
1 Corinthians 14:6-13
12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are
zealous of spiritual ùgifts], seek that ye
may excel to the edifying of the church.
13 „herefore let him that speaketh in an
ùun nown] tongue pray that he may
interpret.
1 Corinthians 14: 15-19
15 „hat is it then? I will pray with the spirit,
and I will pray with the understanding
also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will
sing with the understanding also.
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the
spirit, how shall he that occupieth the
room of the unlearned say Amen at thy
giving of thanks, seeing he
understandeth not what thou sayest?
1 Corinthians 14: 15-19
17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the
other is not edified.
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues
more than ye all:
19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five
words with my understanding, that ùby
my voice] I might teach others also, than
ten thousand words in an ùun nown]
tongue.
Thus, on the basis of the above verses in 1
Corinthians 14 (vv. 6-
6-13, 15-
15-19), it is argued
that tongues is the ability to speak real
FO—EIGN languages, hitherto unknown and
not learned by them? (Until recently, this has
been the unanimous position of traditional
Catholic & ˜rotestant churches. It is also the
position of the Adventist church.
So, there are two
views on the meaning
of tongues found in 1
Corinthians 14
--Unintelligible Utterance (Gibberish)? Or
--Supernatural Ability to Speak a Foreign
Language?
Two conflicting interpretations on
the nature of tongues brought
forth in 1 Cor 14:

(c) Both sides interpret the

meaning ³edifying´ (vv. 4-
5) differently.
1 Corinthians 14: 4-5
4 He that speaketh in an ùun nown] tongue
edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth
edifieth the church.
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues,
but rather that ye prophesied: for greater
ùis] he that prophesieth than he that
speaketh with tongues, except he
interpret, that the church may receive
edifying.

NOTE: It was from
Ephesus that ˜aul wrote
his letter to the
Corinthians. So, ˜aul knew
what the true tongues was.
He had seen it. Therefore,
what he wrote about to the
Corinthians couldn¶t be
something else!
Now that we
understand what
the Bible means by
tongues, we are
ready to tackle 1
Corinthians 14.
„ „

Some church members were using their
real gift of speaking in foreign languages
(tongues) in the church, when no one
understood them. ˜aul was simply
saying that whenever you come to
church, don¶t use those foreign tongues
unless someone can interpret.
If you insist on doing so, though God
understands what you are saying, no
one there understands you. You may be
speaking the mysteries of the Gospel,
but since members can¶t understand
your foreign tongue, you are speaking in
the air.
In the light of our understanding
of Scripture, let¶s now read the
versus that initially was
confusing to us.

1 Corinthians 14:1-5, 14, 18, 39, etc.

1 Corinthians 14:1-4
1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual ùgifts],
but rather that ye may prophesy.
2 For he that speaketh in an ùun nown] tongue
speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no
man understandeth ùhim]; howbeit in the spirit
he speaketh mysteries.
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men ùto]
edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an ùun nown] tongue
edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth
edifieth the church.
1 Corinthians 14:5, 14, 15
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but
rather that ye prophesied: for greater ùis] he
that prophesieth than he that speaketh with
tongues, except he interpret, that the church
may receive edifying.
14 For if I pray in an ùun nown] tongue, my spirit
prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15 „hat is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I
will pray with the understanding also: I will
sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the
understanding also.
1 Corinthians 14:16-18
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how
shall he that occupieth the room of the
unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks,
seeing he understandeth not what thou
sayest?
17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the
other is not edified.
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more
than ye all: thousand words in an ùun nown]
tongue.
1 Corinthians 14:19-21
19. Yet in the church I had rather speak five
words with my understanding, that ùby my
voice] I might teach others also, than ten
thousand words in an ùun nown] tongue.
20 Brethren, be not children in understanding:
howbeit in malice be ye children, but in
understanding be men.
21 In the law it is written, „ith ùmen of] other
tongues and other lips will I speak unto this
people; and yet for all that will they not hear
me, saith the Lord.
1 Corinthians 14:22-24
22 „herefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that
believe, but to them that believe not: but
prophesying ùserveth] not for them that believe not,
but for them which believe.
23 If therefore the whole church be come together into
one place, and all speak with tongues, and there
come in ùthose tht re] unlearned, or unbelievers,
will they not say that ye are mad?
24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that
believeth not, or ùone] unlearned, he is convinced of
all, he is judged of all:
1 Corinthians 14:25-27

25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest;

and so falling down on ùhis] face he will worship
God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together,
every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath
a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation.
Let all things be done unto edifying.
27 If any man speak in an ùun nown] tongue, ùlet it be]
by two, or at the most ùby] three, and ùtht] by
course; and let one interpret.
1 Corinthians 14:28, 33

28 But if there be no interpreter, let him

keep silence in the church; and let him
speak to himself, and to God.
33 For God is not ùthe uthor] of
confusion, but of peace, as in all churches
of the saints.

„hat then Does the Bible Really Teach?

Tongues in the Bible is the
miraculous, supernatural ability given
by the Holy Spirit to believers to
speak real (known) foreign languages
they had not previously studied or
known for the express purpose of
communicating the Gospel message.
It is NOT a gibberish!
This true gift of tongues is available
today. We need it to proclaim the
gospel. Already, God is doing it
wherever it is needed. He is also
imparting the gift of interpretation of
tongues (languages) where needed
