Introduction

Now a days Fire alarm systems are

most essential in every where. It
can detects the fire in selected
zones with the help of smoke
detectors and heat detectors and
give the message to the Fire and
Safety crew .
Where Fire alarm systems are used

1. Heavy Continuous Process plants

2. Small batch processing plants
3. Defense establishments
4. Shopping malls
5. Software Industries
6. Super specialty Hospitals
7. Storage yards
8. Corporate offices
9. Closed Electrical sub stations

Types of Fire Alarm system in our
complex

A. Minimax Fire Alarm Systems Installed in

Plant-1 and Off sites plants.
B. e-Zone (Earlier it was Vijay FAS)
in plant-2
Concept behind the system

With the help of hard wired and soft wired

network we can communicate the event of
Fire or any abnormality like persons injury
and equipment damage from particular area
to control room through Detectors or MCPs.
Minimax Fire Alarm and Detection
system
It is completely tradition type system. That
means the used panels Stage 1,2,3, are
completely hard wired when compared with
e-zone FAS. The regular operations like
Isolation, reset, etc has to be performed
with the help of thumb wheel switch. Fault
identity can be through LEDs only. But it is
quite reliable system.
Essential parts in the System.

The Fire alarm and Detection system consists of the following

panels and detection devices.
1)Smoke Detectors,
A) Ionization type
B) Photoelectric type
2) Heat detectors,
3) MCPs,
4) Stage panels.
5) Hooter and
6) 2 X 12V, 26 Ah batteries for stand by supply.
Purpose and Function of MCP

In case of Fire someone breaks the

glass of the manual call point, a
signal is transmitted to the Stage III
panel located at the Fire station
indicating the zone/area.
The Manual call Point makes use of 2 micro
switch rated for 2 Amps 24V DC. This has a
Normally Opened referred to as N.O and
Normally Closed referred to as N.C contacts.
In the normal operation the N.C contact is
opened and N.O contact is closed. When the
glass is broken, these positions are reversed
and an alarm is actuated. The current drawn
in this condition is around 250 m.a.

Stage -1 panel

These panels are provided in cable galleries,

MCC Rooms, switch gear room, battery
room etc. The smoke Detector installed in
the above areas will be terminated to the
stage-I panel. This stage I panel derives its
input power supply from the stage-II Panel
located in its respective control rooms.
Stage-II Panel

These panels are provided in all the Control

Rooms. The stage II panels has its own
independent power supply. The detector
installed in the Control Rooms are
terminated to stage II panel. The
Annunciations from the stage I are
connected to the stage II panel.
Stage-III panel

This panel is located in the Fire Station. The

Annunciations from stage II panels, stage I
with power supply panels and out door
weather proof manual call points/flame proof
manual call points are connected to the
stage-III panel.
A siren with siren controller has been
connected to this stage-III panel (see drg) to
alert the fire security people.

Communication among Stage1,2
and 3 panels.
The Stage I panel at the cable gallery and switch
gear room will derive its 24 V DC Power supply
from this stage II panel located in the control
room. The fire signal from the stage I panels are
connected to the Zones in the stage II Panel
located in control room. A fire signal
annunciations from the stage II Panel is repeated
in the zone at the stage III Control Panel at Fire
Station. Cond.
In the event of any of the detectors
or Manual Call points actuated due
to fire in the cable gallery or
switchgear room or control
room/office room, an audio visual
indication is given in the respective
stage I panel indicating the Zone
of Fire. Cond.
Immediately on receipt of the fire
signal in the panel, the external
hooter will come to operation.
Simultaneously the alarm is
registered in the stage II Panel
located in the Control Room,
indicating Area affected by fire.

Contd.
A fire signal from the stage II Panel is
repeated at stage III Panel (Master control
Panel) located at the fire station indicating
the Building affected by fire.
Immediately on receipt of the fire signal in
the stage III Pane the fire crew will
respond accordingly.

General Complaints
1. False Fire alarms: This will happen
generally in all the detectors due to dust
particles, Spider webs.

2. Zone Open: If the resistor connected at

The end of the zone was open,
immediately Open indication will come in
the respective stage panel.
General Complaints

MCP Glass breakage : It happens due to

over pressing of the nuts, sensitive
property of the glass.
e-Zone Fire Alarm System
e-Zone Fire Alarm System. Working
principle is similar to Minimax Fire Alarm
System.
It was installed one year back. It is a
conventional type Automation system.

2) Operations like

by thumb wheel switch
3) All the indications ll on LCD display
come by LEDs
Minimax e-Zone
4) Not event recording Events can be recorded by
default.
5) All the panels are
large in size Very slim and required
very less space
6) Internal connections are
more Very less

7) Each zones requires One PCB can serve all

one PCB The zones activities.
e-Zone Fire Alarm System
Problems faced:
1) Earlier all the slave panels status was not
showing properly. Even then the two slave panels
at main stores and bagging plant are working,
the status in PC/Master panel at F & S control
room showing isolation.
Solution: The vendor connected one booster
panel which is strength the week signals of all the
9 slave panels before the master panel at F & F
control room.
2) Some times the status of some
slave panels like 2,5 and 6 are
disappear in master panel/PC at
control room , even all the above 3
slave are in healthy condition.
Solution: Again the vendor has
came and divided, slave no. 1 to 7
connected directly to master panel
and slave no. 8 and 9 those are
located at far end were connected
through booster panel.
