Description
The Um Interface Speech Frame Repairing feature uses an enhanced decoding
technique on the Um interface and automatically repairs the bit-error speech frames
over the Um interface, thereby minimizing the impact of the bit-error speech frames on
speech performance. In the case of high bit error rate (BER) or low carrier-to-
interference ratio (CIR), if speech frames that cannot be decoded are discarded, the
speech quality is significantly impaired and users in calls undesirably perceive voice
intermittency. With Um Interface Speech Frame, the decoding success rate increases
and the speech quality in the case of high BER or low CIR improves.
Benefits
This feature provides the following benefits:
Increases the mean opinion score (MOS) by 0.1 to 0.2 when the uplink Frame
Erase Ratio (FER) exceeds 1%.
Decreases the voice intermittency and improves user satisfaction with speech
quality.

What is Um Interface Speech Frame Repairing
Technical Description
When the BER is high or the CIR is low, speech frames that cannot be decoded may be discarded. If
this occurs, the source decoding module receives no valid information about the discarded frames and has to
use traditional packet compensation technology. That is, the source decoding module reuses or expands the
previously received speech frames as replacements for these frames to compensate for the frame loss and
limits the amplitude of speech wave to mute the speech. The traditional packet compensation technology
protects users against uncomfortable voice or noise, but it cannot restore the lost speech frames.
Um Interface Speech Frame Repairing utilizes the following two kinds of information to reestablish
speech frames that fail to be decoded:
Information about channel decoding (such as the BER and signal-to-noise ratio): Certain reliable bits in
these frames are used.
Signal source coding parameters in speech frames received before and after these frames: These
parameters can be used to estimate the parameters contained in these frames.
After being repaired using Um Interface Speech Frame Repairing, the speech frames that fail to be
decoded will be sent as good-quality frames to the source decoding module for decoding. In this way, noise
caused by frame discarding can be prevented, and certain discarded frames can be resumed, thereby
decreasing the voice intermittency and improving the speech quality.
Um Interface Speech Frame Repairing applies when the uplink BER over the Um interface is high or
the CIR is low. When the uplink FER is higher than 1%, the MOS increases by 0.1 to 0.2.
Um Interface Speech Frame Repairing applies to EFR calls and calls that use narrowband AMR coding
rate 4.75 kbit/s, 7.4 kbit/s, or 12.2 kbit/s.
