THE ARTIST

Jordan Terrell Carter better known by his stage name Playboi Carti,
is an American rapper from Atlanta, Georgia.
Carti makes Hip Hop music, the sub-genres being Trap and Cloud Rap.
According to The New Yorker, Playboi Carti's music is characterized by
"bellowing bass, bright, wiry synthesizers, and slack-jawed ad-libs".
Playboi Carti is signed to Interscope Records (a subsidiary to Universal
Music Group).
THE SONG

YUNGXANHOE by Playboi Carti is the song we have selected for our music
video. This song includes a sample of the PlayStation 2 Start Up screen and
has heavy bass along with trap drums. The content of the song talks about
how he is sad and how he takes drugs to counter his depression.
The song is featured on the In Abundance (30 September 2016) compilation
mixtape and was released some time in early 2015.
GAINING PERMISSION

We thought the best way to get into contact with Playboi Carti to get
permission to use this song was to email his management team. However we
realised afterwards that this song was featured on a mixtape and was created
for non profit usage, which means we can also use this song as long as we do
not earn any money off of it, so this means we do not need to get explicit
permission from Playboi Carti or the people managing him as this was made
even before he was signed.
INITIAL IDEAS FOR THE VISUAL
CONCEPT
Initially we want to feature an urban location within our music video. This is a
typical convention of Hip Hop and Trap music videos and is also easy for us to
pull off as we live very close to central London and this makes it easy for us
to shoot. We also thought that in post production we could utilise colour
correction to distort the colours and lighting to create a cool abstract effect.
Also we were going to use a car as a prop within the music video to make it
more exciting, we could get shots of the artist driving inside of the car and
shots of him dancing with the car, this again is a typical convention of Hip
Hop music videos as cars are used to connote power and wealth (which is
capitalist ideology).

L$D A$AP Rocky

Urban location, tracking shots, long takes, narrative.
NARRATIVE

We liked the narrative of the L$D Music video and thought that it would fit along with
the song we are going to be making a video for as both cover the topic of drugs and
depression.
The narrative is A$AP Rocky takes LSD whilst in Tokyo and the video follows his trip,
using editing, camera work and lighting to reflect his inner feelings of being lost with
no direction. This happens whilst he is walking through Tokyo he finds a love interest
and fall in love whilst both of them are on LSD. This is a play on the songs actual title
meaning L$D (love, sex, dreams).
It also borrows heavily from Gaspar Noes psychedelic fantasy film Enter the Void
(2009), using imagery of Tokyo and the room of reflective glass fairy lights
chandeliers carnival lights and bright colours to give powerful visuals mimicking an
acid trip.
NARRATIVE

We are going for a similar abstract narrative about the inner feelings of a
person. However we will be leaving out the love interest plot from our video
and focusing solely on one individual within the video. Wen are drawing
inspiration from visually ambitious movies such as Enter The Void (which was
the inspiration for the L$D music video) as well as music videos such as
Draws by House Of Pharaohs which is shot within London which is where we
are shooting our video as well.
EDITING IDEAS

Outline effect:
This effect is utilised in many modern Hip-hop videos, such as Hit Em Wit It by
Famous Dex. To achieve this effect we have to stop the video frame by frame
and draw over the object or subject we want to have the effect on. This effect
will highlight certain things we want to draw attention to and can be used
alongside various lighting techniques as well as transitions to create abstract
effects.
