Guide Questions on how to critique a
Position Paper:
In what instances did the writer engage with others who have an opinion about the
issue addressed in this paper?
Does the phrases demonstrate how and to what extent does the writer agree or
disagree with others who have weighed in on this debate?
Does the thesis statement help you, the reader, clearly and fully understand the
writers main point?
Skim the topic sentences of the body of the essay. Do these topic sentences each
connect to the main thesis statement?
More generally, to what extent does the argument function as a response to a larger
conversation about an issue?
