Integrated river basin management in

Brinchang.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

River system is the most important component for human

needs in Cameron Highlands. The river provide a lot of
benefits to human especially in the human activities relating
to the development. How ever, these activities will bring the
harmful to the river system and change the health of the river.
It also will effect the quantity, quality, availability and
sustainability of the river system.
LITERATURE REVIEW
a) Water is the most vital element among the natural resources, and is
critical for the survival of all living organisms including human, food
production, and economic development. Today there are many cities
worldwide facing an acute shortage of water and nearly 40 percent of
the worlds food supply is grown under irrigation and a wide variety of
industrial processes depends on water. The environment, economic
growth, and developments are all highly influenced by water-its regional
and seasonal availability, and the quality of surface and groundwater.
The quality of water is affected by human activities and is declining due
to the rise of urbanization, population growth, industrial production,
climate change and other factors. The resulting water pollution is a
serious threat to the well-being of both the Earth and its population.
(Joshua Nizel Halder, 2015)

b) Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) is the management of all

surface and subsurface water resources of the river basin in its entirety
with due attention to water quality, water quantity and evvironmental
integrity.
(Tewodros Assefa)
c) Integrated river basin management (IRBM) is the process of coordinating
conservation, management and development of water, land and related
resources across sectors within a given river basin, in order to maximise
the economic and social benefits derived from water resources in an
equitable manner while preserving and, where necessary, restoring
freshwater ecosystems.

and agricultural activities. These kind of activities will give
the impact to the river characteristics. Lack of enforcement
from the government will lead the illegal development
activities in Brinchang. It will cause decreasing health of the
river and will give big impact to the quantity, quality,
availability and sustainability of the river.
