The French and Indian War
1754-1763 - Began in the colonies before spreading
to Europe.
Britain and Prussia vs. Austria, Russia, France and
Spain, among others.
Fighting was on three continents
The French and Indian War
The Spark 1754, 21-year old George
Washington was sent to clear the French out
that they claimed had entered the territory
illegally.
In a skirmish with the French, 10 Frenchmen
were killed and the rest taken captive.
French & Indian War
Times George Washington Didnt Die:
One of his Indian guides shot at him
from a few feet away and missed.
On their march back to Virginia,
Washington and his men encountered
several blizzards and he fell into an icy
river and almost drowned
(hypothermia, anyone? )
The French and Indian War
Washington had to make a hasty retreat from
the larger French force at Fort Duquesne.
Fort Necessity - He threw up a fort in a low-
lying area and allowed the French to fire down
into the fort and forcing Washington to
surrender.
The French and Indian War
In Washingtons surrender, he signed a
note that placed the entire blame on the
British for the skirmish.
The British government repudiated the
note and the two countries went to war
again.
French & Indian War
Times George Washington Didnt Die:
At Fort Necessity George Washington
surrendered (his only military
surrender) and the French allow him
and his men to march back to Virginia.
French vs. British
Strengths Strengths

Weaknesses Weaknesses
French Strengths
Better relationship with Native
Americans.
Adopted guerilla warfare.
French Weaknesses
Isolated fur trappers and traders.
Fewer numbers of colonists.
Little investment into colonies.
British Strengths
Outnumbered the French 20:1
Investment into colonial success
Controlled the waterways.
Removed threat of French Catholics, the
Acadians, from Nova Scotia.
British Weaknesses
Colonies were fragmented and not
unified.
Albany Congress rejected a plan to
unite the colonies under a central
president and congress.
Colonist didnt want strong, central
government control.
Political Cartoons
First one was created by Benjamin
Franklin in response to the Albany
Congress and lack of unity in the
colonies.
Was a play off an article he wrote
sarcastically thanking the British for
sending convicted felons to the American
colonies.
Political Cartoons
Franklin suggested that in return the
colonies send a cargo of rattlesnakes,
which could be distributed in St. James
Park, Spring Garden, and other places of
pleasure, and particularly in the
noblemens gardens.
The rattlesnake soon became a symbol
for the colonies.
Political Cartoons
The Gadsden flag was made popular by
Patriot Col. Gadsden from South
Carolina. He saw the flag, liked it and as
a result had the Continental Navy carry a
similar flag when the fleet was launched
for the first time in 1776.
