Pay attention to the following
description.
assessment

1. The process of gathering data and fashioning them into an interpretable form;
measurement
judgments can then be on the basis of this assessment
2. The process of quantifying the observed performance of classroom learners.
test
3. A procedure designed to elicit certain behaviors from which one can make
inferences about certain characteristics of an individual
evaluation
4. Systematic gathering of information for the purpose of making decisions

WHICH OF THE DESCRIPTION MEANS TEST, MEASUREMENT, ASSESSMENT, AND

EVALUATION?
TEST
A procedure designed to elicit certain behavior from which one can make inferences
about certain characteristics of an individual

PROCEDURE
The use of certain techniques, approaches, or strategies to reach a desired testing goal.
Written? Aural? Pictorial? Audiovisual?
ELICIT
The act of drawing out, causing something to come, making something inside to become outside
CERTAIN BEHAVIOR
Knowledge or reactions towards certain conditions, certain competences like making inferences
in reading, pronunciation, speaking, etc.
MAKE INFERENCES ABOUT CERTAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF AN INDIVIDUAL
Making conclusions about individuals. Conclusions can be made after we observe.
MEASUREMENT (v. measure)
The process of quantifying the observed performance of classroom learners.

QUANTIFYING
Using numbers to characterize certain aspects of objects
OBSERVED PERFORMANCE
Performance which wants to be known from learners. In language testing, performance
can be knowledged of the language, like grammar or vocabulary
1.EVALUATION
Systematic gathering of information for the purpose of making decisions

GATHERING
Process of collecting data or information.

PURPOSE
Aim of the data collection in our language testing, the purpose is to make decisions.

So, evaluation is a process that has three steps.

First, gather the data systemmatically
Second, analyze the data gathered
Third, make decisions.
ASSESSMENT
The process of gathering data and fashioning them into an interpretable form;
judgments can then be on the basis of this assessment
PROCESS OF GATHERING DATA
To gather data, assessment can be done with test or non test.

FASHIONING INTO AN INTERPRETABLE FORM

In making the data from test/ non test interpretable, measurement is done here.

JUDGMENT
Judgment is not the point, but it can be done using the interpreted data. So, the data can be
the basis for making judgment.

Now, you see that assessment sometimes involves test, sometimes not. It also needs
measurement, sometimes. At other times, assessment also generates evaluation.
Yet, not all the time.
