COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Communication is the backbone of our society. It allows us to form connections,

influence decisions, and motivate change.

Public speaking is one of the most important and most dreaded forms of
communication.

Speech anxiety, is the most common fear people have across the globe. It is easy
to be the student who sits in the back of the classroom and avoids raising his or
her hand to dodge such situations.

But in the working world, public speaking is a vital skill to have and to hone. It
effects simple, everyday interactions between coworkers, bosses and employees,
marketing professionals and clients, etc
Why Public Speaking is Important:
To Win Over the Crowd
The power of persuasion can carry you far and it all starts by honing
those public speaking skills.

Mastering public speaking results in an increase in confidence and

with that, a cool and collected presence in front of an audience.

For example, in order to express why a certain product is good to

customer, one must use convincing language to persuade him or
her to buy.
Why Public Speaking is Important:
To Motivate People
A great public speaker attains the power to motivate his or her
audience to do something, stop doing something, change a
behavior, or reach objectives

Elections have been won simply because one candidate was a

better public speaker than the other.

Being knowledgeable is a factor, of course, but more importantly,

being able to arouse passion in people through skilled public
speaking will motivate your audience to make a move.
Why Public Speaking is Important:
To Inform
From presenting research papers and PowerPoint presentations in
school to presenting ideas and pitches to your boss or client,
informative public speaking is a vital component of a successful
career across all work fields.

A good informative speech sharing your knowledge of a subject

with an audience, enhances their understanding and makes them
remember your words long after youve finished.
Why good public speaking skills can
impact your career and finances.

TYPES OF SPEECHES

Speech Speech

Persuasive Speech Entertaining Speech

Informative

This speech serves to provide interesting and useful information to

your audience. Some examples of informative speeches:

A teacher telling students about earthquakes

A student talking about her research
A travelogue about the Tower of London
A computer programmer speaking about new software
Demonstrative Speeches

This has many similarities with an informative speech. A

demonstrative speech also teaches you something. The main
difference lies in including a demonstration of how to do the thing
youre teaching. Some examples of demonstrative speeches:

How to start your own blog

How to bake a cake
How to write a speech
How to just about anything
Persuasive Speech

A persuasive speech works to convince people to change in some

way: they think, the way they do something, or to start doing
something that they are not currently doing. Some examples of
persuasive speeches:

Become an organ donor

Improve your health through better eating
Television violence is negatively influencing our children
Become a volunteer and change the world
Entertaining

The after-dinner speech is a typical example of an entertaining

speech. The speaker provides pleasure and enjoyment that make
the audience laugh or identify with anecdotal information. Some
examples of entertaining speeches:

Excuses for any occasion

Explaining cricket to an American
Things you wouldnt know without the movies
Writing a Speech Outline

It highlights the key logical elements. i.e. what points are being
made to logically support the core message?

It highlights the key structural elements. e.g. introduction, body,

conclusion,stories, high-level concepts

It links these elements together in a sequence,

Basic Speech Outlines

The basic speech outline template for structural elements is:

- Introduction
- Body
- Conclusion
Similarly, the basic speech outline template for logical elements :

- Tell them what youre going to say

- Tell them
- Tell them what youve said

Put these together, and you have the start of a generic speech outline:
- Introduction Establish topic and core message; list supporting points
- Body
Supporting Point One
Supporting Point Two
Supporting Point Three
Conclusion Recap main points; summarize core message; call-to-
action

It is surprising how well this simple 3-part outline template works for a
wide range of speech topics. Incidentally, this same basic
formula can be seen in novels, short stories, movies, plays, reports,
business briefings, emails, memos, and many other forms of
communication.

Some people believe that stories are the best building blocks for speeches. For
example, in The Story Factor (Annette Simmons), the author claims that storytelling is the
key to business communications.

Finding a "Good" Topic

If you are having difficulty finding a topic, it helps to realize that it's not
the topic that makes a speech effective. There are no "bad" topics, but
there are inappropriate or poorly developed ones. At this stage you
should focus on choosing a topic:
that you have some knowledge about, or wish to gain knowledge
about.
that you care about.
that is appropriate for the audience and the setting.
