gradual destruction of materials (usually
metals) by chemical reaction with their
environment.

Crevice Corrosion
Crevice corrosion is a localized form of corrosion usually
associated with a stagnant solution on the micro-
environmental level.
Usually occurs under gaskets, coatings, derbies, rivets
and bolts, between valve disks and seats.
Causes of crevice corrosion
Narrow spacing Between two metals
or between metal and non-metal
Cracks and pits
Bio-fouling
Deposition of mud, derbies, dirt etc.
Nuts and bolts
Factors Effecting Corrosion Rate
1. Bulk solution composition
2. Alloy composition
3. Mechanism of mass transport
4. Change in chemistry of electrolyte
5. Electro-Chemical reactions
6. Passivity of metal
7. Quality and nature of passive layer
8. Size of crevice
9. Total geometry of the system
Mechanism
Stage 1
Equal conc. of
oxygen inside and
outside the crevice
Stage 2
Depletion of oxygen
in crevice
Stage 3
Development of anodic and
cathodic sides
stage 4
Increase in the acidity of electrolyte

Stage 5
Propagation of crack or crevice
Mode of Attack

Depending on the environment developed in the

crevice and the nature of the metal, the crevice
corrosion can take a form of:
1. Pitting (i.e., formation of pits),
2. Filiform corrosion (this type of crevice
corrosion that may occur on a metallic surface
underneath an organic coating),
3. Intergrannular attack, or
4. Stress corrosion cracking.

Combating of Crevice Corrosion
Use Welded butt joints instead of riveted or bolt joints.

Close crevices in lap joint in continues welding

Combating Crevice Corrosion
Weld tubes instead of rolling in tubes in tube sheets.

Use solid Nano absorbent gaskets such as Teflon

Combating of crevice corrosion
Design Vessels for complete drainage.
Avoid sharp corners and stagnant areas.

Proper cleaning and washing to prevent the solids settling on

the bottom.
Combating of crevice corrosion
Inspect equipment and remove deposits frequently
Remove solids in suspension early in the process
Remove wet packing materials during long shutdown
Provide uniform environment

Factors Affecting Crevice corrosions
Environmental Factors
Chloride Concentration

The chloride concentration has a significant effect on the

resistance to crevice corrosion. As the chloride concentration
increases, the susceptibility to crevice corrosion increases.

Temperature

Temperature of the electrolyte solution is one of the crucial

factors controlling the susceptibility to crevice corrosion. there is
approximately a linear reverse relationship between the
repassivation potential and the temperature
Environmental factors
Relative Humidity
If the relative humidity is less than 65% metal is unaffected but
at more than 90% humidity corrosion appears as blistering
Environmental factors
Sand particle, Dirt , corrosion product

Contact between metals and non metallic surface can cause

crevice corrosion in case of gasket

Asbestos ,glass ,rubber, wax, fabrics are the examples
