Corrosion :
Corrosion can be viewed as a universal
phenomenon, omnipresent and omnipotent .
Definition :- Corrosion is the deterioration or
destruction of metals and alloys in the presence of
an environment by chemical or electrochemical
means.
In simple terminology, corrosion processes involve
reaction of metals with environmental species.
Corrosion Types:
The most important types of corrosion are
Uniform corrosion.
Pitting corrosion.
Galvanic corrosion.
Erosion corrosion.
Intergranular corrosion
Selective leaching.
Crevice corrosion.
Corrosion fatigue.
3
UNIFORM CORROSION:
In this type corrosion
will occur in entire
exposed surface area.
This will occurred by
chemical (or)
electrochemical
reaction.
GALVANIC CORROSION:
Galvanic (or) two metal corrosion.
Due to the potential difference between the
dissimilar materials.
Anode - less resistant.
Cathode - high resistant.
EROSION CORROSION:
Due to the relative
movement of the
corrosion fluid &
material surface ,rate of
attack is increased.
In this type material is
removed as dissolved
ions & solid corrosion
products are formed.
INTERGRANULAR CORROSION:
Intergranular
corrosion can be
caused by impurities
at the grain
boundaries &
enrichment of the
one of the alloy
elements in grain
boundary areas.
EXAMPLE : small
amount of iron in
aluminum alloy
CORROSION FATIGUE:
It is also called as stress corrosion cracking.
cracking caused by simultaneous presence of an
tensile stress & specific corrosion medium.
CREVICE CORROSION:
CREVICE - a crack (or)
narrow opening.
This type of attack is
occurred in gasket
surfaces, surface
deposits, bolt and rivet
heads.
SELECTIVE LEACHING:
Selective leaching
means removal of
particular one element
from alloy.
EXAMPLE : removal
of zinc in brass alloys.
PITTING CORROSION:
It is the most destructive form of corrosion.
PIT - Cavity (or) Hole in the metal surface.
The corrosion will occur in the surrounding area of
the holes.
Holes is produced by continuous flow of fluid over
the surface.
