Reading is a source of comprehensible input that enhances second language.

ELLs have more control over what they read than what they hear.

They can choose the topic they read

They can go back and re-read

They can take there time while reading

They can look up words in the dictionary if they do not understand

 Read Alouds

Help ELLs learn to read, expose them to illustration (help them make connections)

Select a book appropriate for grade level and English proficiency level
Read alouds involves the whole class
Reading a one book every day from K-8th grade will expose students to 1,600-3200 books
More important to ELLs (many come from homes where parents are unable to read alouds in
English or have access to a library
Running Record

What is a Running Record?

A running record is a visual recording of a student
reading word by word, in order to measure a
student's reading performance.
How to administer a running record?
The teacher selects a book that may be on the
student's reading level. The student then reads the
text and the teacher makes marks as the student
reads. The marks indicate if the student has
omitted, substituted, inserted, an incorrect word.
Other marks may indicate self-correction, repeated
words, or phrases. After the reading the teacher
asks comprehension questions or even a simple
retelling of the story or text. The teacher then
calculated what the students score which will
indicate the student's appropriate reading level.

1. Scribble writing ( Drawing)

Scribbles reflect the orthography of the native language.

No sound symbol correspondence, numbers and symbols are often interspersed.

Writing in patten, conversational spelling.

Messages are longer, punctuation.
