PDH/SDH TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

OBJECTIVE:

To equip the trainees on the basic principles and theories

of PDH & SDH transmission, specifically they should be
able to:

1) Learn the basic principles of SDH & PDH TRS

and be able to validate their knowledge through
evaluation/examination.

2) Operate the test equipment and must do the

hands On exercises.

3) Do commissioning and testing and be able to

certify as well, based on their commissioned
equipment in line with ITU-T standards.

TECHNOLOGY USED:

a) SDH Synchronous Digital Hierarchy

b) PDH Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy

Human Resources Development Center 12

What is PDH?

PLESIOCHRONOUS DIGITAL HIERARCHY

is a technology used in telecommunication

network to transport large quantities of data
over digital transport equipment such as fiber
optic and microwave radio system.

Human Resources Development Center 13

BASIC CONCEPT OF PDH:

1) Based on the fundamental concept of

time division multiplexing (TDM).

2) Use point-to-point or two wire link

3) Run in state where different parts of the

network are almost, but not quite perfectly
synchronized.

Human Resources Development Center 14

BASIC TRANSMISSION RATE

2 Mega bit per second for data/voice transmission

30X64 Kilo bit per second + 2x64kilo bit per second

For data/voice/video signaling & synchronization

Human Resources Development Center 15

BIT-RATES USED (European standard-E1)

1) 2Mega bit per second

2) 8Mega bit per second

3) 34Mega bit per second

4) 140Mega bit per second

Synchronization Principle

- Clock source is generally controlled by the

equipment

- Bit rate varies from (+/- 50ppm) of 2MBPS

PDH INTERFACES USED IN GSM NETWORK

1) A Interface between Mobile Switching Center

(MSC) & Transcoder (TC). (2MBPS
G.703)

2) ATER Interface between transcoder (TC) and

Base station controller (BSC).(2MBPS

3) ABIS Interface between Base Station Controller

(BSC) and Base transciever station (BTS).
