WALTER ELIAS DISNEY

Born on December 5th, 1901

Chicago, Illinois
At first, he became the cartoonist of the
school newspaper, drawing patriotic
pictures about World War I
Walt always knew that he wanted to be
an artist, but his father did not approve
of his dream.
At age 16 he joined the Red Cross
In 1919, Walt was back from driving for the
American Ambulance Corps in World War I,
and looking for work as an artist. He found
it at Pesmen-Rubin Commercial Art Studio,
where he met and befriended Ubbe
Iwerks.
At the start of 1920 Walt and Iwerks were
both out of a job, so they tried to open up
their own studio, the short-lived Iwerks-
Disney Commercial Artists.
Disney opened a new business with a co-
worker from the Film Ad Co, Fred Harman.
Their main client was the local Newman
Theater, and the short cartoons they
produced were sold as "Newman's Laugh-
O-Grams".
Disney became interested in
animation, although he preferred
drawn cartoons
The Laugh-O-Grams cartoons did not
provide enough income to keep the
company solvent, so Disney started
production of Alice's Wonderland based
on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
which combined live action with
animation.
A distributor in New York, M. J. Winkler,
contracted to distribute the Alice
Comedies on October 16, 1923, and
this date became the start of the Disney
company.
The series ran until July 1927, by
which time Disney had begun to
tire of it and wanted to move
away from the mixed format to
all animation , so they
created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit
Then, Walt had to come up with a new
character, and that character was
Mickey Mouse.
Mickey first was seen in a single test
screening (Plane Crazy).
Mickey officially debuted in the short
film Steamboat Willie (1928), one of the
first sound cartoons
He continued to create new
characters and coming up
with new ideas.
Some of the major
characters were Donald
Duck, Minnie Mouse, Goofy,
and Pluto.
In 1933 - Disney produced The Three Little Pigs
In 1934 - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, based on the fairy tale
In early 1938 Pinocchio
In April 1942 - Bambi
In early 1950 - Disney produced Cinderella
In 1952 - The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men
DISNEYLAND
Walt dreamed about having more ways
to make children happy, the answer?
A themepark.
The concept for Disneyland began when Walt Disney was visiting Griffith
Park in Los Angeles with his daughters Diane and Sharon. While watching
them, he came up with the idea of a place where adults and their
children could go and have fun together .
In 1954, after the Disneyland funding had been agreed, ABC
broadcast Walt Disney's Disneyland
ABC was pleased with the ratings, leading to Disney's first daily television
program, The Mickey Mouse Club, a variety show catering specifically to
children

During the war, Disney employees
created educational films for various
federal agencies, including a 1942
animated short, The New Spirit,
commissioned by the Treasury
Department to encourage people to
pay their income taxes as a way to
support the war effort.
The film, which starred Donald Duck, was shown in thousands of movie
theaters and even earned an Academy Award nomination.
He won more Academy Awards than anyone else

1932) for creating Mickey Mouse, another (in 1939) for Snow White
and the Seven Dwarfs and a third (in 1942) for Fantasia and its
