Diesel Power Plants
A generating station with diesel engine as the prime mover for the
generation of electrical energy.

The diesel burns inside the engine and the products of this
combustion act as the working fluid to produce mechanical energy.

The diesel engine drives alternator which converts mechanical

energy into electrical energy.

Favorable at places where demand of power is less, sufficient

quantity of coal and water is not available and the transportation
facilities are inadequate.

Typical layout Of Plant
Operation Of Plant
A diesel engine converts the energy contained in the diesel fuel into mechanical energy in the
form of rotation of a shaft.
The shaft turns a generator which is essentially a magnet contained within a coil of wire.
The generator converts the rotational energy into a voltage across the coil - electrical energy.
Maintenance of Plant
General inspection
Lubrication service
Cooling system service
Fuel system service
Servicing and testing starting batteries
Regular engine exercise
It is generally a good idea to establish and
adhere to a schedule of maintenance and
service based on the specific power application
and the severity of the environment
Downtime
Downtime or outage duration refers to a period of time that a system fails to provide or
perform its primary function.

Update or Service the Machinery

Explain Downtime to Employees
Regular Evaluations
Monitor the Efficiency of Plant output
The average downtime ranges from 30-40 minutes in Diesel Power Plants. Which
directly affects the economy as a whole .
Start Up Time

Time taken for full functioning of the plant.

Diesel Engine start times set at 3 to 5
seconds.
However the actual time required for full
generator power can be 10 to 15 seconds.
Cost Of Generation
Power from diesel costs anywhere between Rs. 16-40/kWh, depending on the application.
The price of diesel has increased 300% since 2002 and 46% since 2010
Selection of Site for Plant Set Up
Ideal choice for the diesel electric power plants is as near to the load
center as possible in order to avoid transmission costs and losses.
The factors to be considered for site selection of diesel power plants are :
Availability of water supply,
Availability of fuel,
Availability of transportation facilities,
Distance from populated area,
Availability of land at reasonable rate and of high bearing capacity to
withstand the load of the plant and also vibrations transmitted to the
foundation from compressors and diesel engines.
Comparison of different types of power plant
Advantages of adopting diesel power plants:
Low installation cost.
Short delivery periods and installation period.
Higher efficiency (as high as 43-45%).
More efficient plant performance under part loads.
Minimum cooling water requirements.
Adopted with air cooled heat exchanger in areas where water is not available.
Short start up time.
