MEANING OF TABLE OF SPECIFICATION
(TOS)
Table of Specification is a plan
prepared by a classroom teacher as a
basis for test construction especially a
periodic test.
Is a two-way chart which describes the
topics/competencies to be covered by a
test and the number of items or points
which will be associated with each
topic.
SPECIFIC AREAS
Remembering- remembering the facts,
terms, definitions and concepts
Understanding- understanding the
meaning of material. Explain,
interpret, summarize, give examples,
predict, translate
Application- selecting a concept or
skill and urging it to solve a problem.
Compute, solve, apply, modify,
construct
SPECIFIC AREAS
Analyzing- breaking material down
into its parts and explaining the
hierarchical relations
Evaluating- making a judgment based
upon a pre-established set of criteria.
Creating- producing something
original after having broken the
material down into its component parts

STEPS IN PREPARING THE TOS
1. List down the topics covered for inclusion in the test.
2. Determine the objective to be assessed in the test.
3. Specify the number of days/hours spent for teaching
a particular topic.
4. Determine the percentage allocation of the test items
for each of the topic covered. The formula applied is
as follows:

5. Determine the number of items for every topic by


multiplying the percentage of allocation for each
topic to the total number of items to be constructed.

ITEMS FOR EACH COMPETENCY:
EXAMPLE:
Mrs. Reyes utilized 10 hours for teaching the unit
on Pre Spanish Philippines. She spent 2 hours in
teaching the topic, Early Filipinos and their
Society. What percentage of test items should
she allocate for the topic?
EXAMPLE:
Mrs. Reyes decided to prepare a 50 item test on
the unit, Pre Spanish Philippines. How many
items should she write for the topic, Early
Filipinos and their Society?
