Our Question and Thesis
How have environmental issues affected Native American
Tribes?

Native American tribes have been negatively affected through the installation of
pipelines on their land along with a history of having their land taken away for
other exploitation.
Audience
Our audience was a fifth grade class at Zilker elementary. We
presented to this group of students to convey the effects of
environmental issues on Native Americans. The information
had to be relatively simplified so it would be easily understood
by a younger audience.

In 2014, organizers with the Protect the Peaks effort made an intentional decision to
shift messaging from defend and not protect the sacred...When we shifted messaging
we wanted to represent the power of the holy San Francisco Peaks as embodied in the
strength, power, and autonomy of Din women.

This source helped us understand that Native Americans are still going through
the same things they were hundreds of years ago. This is an organization that is
fighting to defend sacredness of Native American tribes. We used this information to
make our audience aware that there are people who are fighting along the Natives
for their rights.

What to Know About the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests, Oct 28.,2016,
http://time.com/4548566/dakota-access-pipeline-standing-rock-sioux/

There are now thousands of people at the construction site or in a nearby encampment,
according to the tribe. Protesters have set up teepee and tent camps on land owned by
Energy Transfer Partners to slow the progress of construction and have threatened to
block the highway

In this document, Justin Worland explains the details of the protest. This shows the
length that the protesters go to to fight for the advancement of the Dakota Access
Pipeline, despite governmental barriers and attempts of stopping the protest. The effects
of the activists slow[s] the progress of construction. The protesters, many of whom
are Native Americans from the area, set up small settlements. We used this information
to prove the level of devotion to attempting to slow or halt development, and disapproval
of the pipeline by American Indians.

Honor the Earth, 2 Feb, 2017,http://www.honorearth.org/

The society which has been created is highly extractive and highly inefficient, where today
material resources and water become wasted and toxic, and we waste 60% or more of the
energy between point of origin and point of consumption. This highly destructive economy has
reached material limits, and is now resorting to extreme extraction

This is from the site of an organization that is set on fighting issues caused by
mining, pipelines, and other exploitation that harms Native Reservations.the data
helps to re-iterate the damage caused by American sources of unclean energy. This
quote shows the impact of environmental exploitation as a whole even if it did not as
greatly follow the impact of the Native groups surrounding the impacts.

Group reflection
We learned that along with the presence of pipelines in areas like the Dakotas,
there were other severe issues such as mining, and pollution. During our
presentation to the fifth grade class, we were surprised by how many of the students
knew about the different protests that were occurring and their knowledge of the
current events, and the Dakota Pipeline. Overall, this project taught us all about
current events and the devastating effects of oil pollution and construction, and the
way it disrupts and influences Indian life.

Possible Improvements

More in depth research so that it could be catered to a wider audience but

overall the research was good when presented to a fifth grade audience
Clearer example other than the dakota access pipeline to show Scale of the
damage caused environmentally
