Tutorials

Ex. 1

A typical merry-go-round have a radius of 3 m and move at

a rate such that it completes one revolution in 5 s.
Estimate the angular velocity of the merry-go-round and
also find the linear speed of a point on its outer edge.

Prof S. Karthiyayini, BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus

Solution

Time period T= 5 s
Angular velocity = 2 /T = 1.257 rad/s
Linear speed v = r = 2(1.257) =3.77 m/s

Ex. 2

A car has wheels of 30 cm radius. It starts from rest and accelerates

uniformly to a speed of 15 m/s in a time of 8.0 s. Find the angular
acceleration of its wheels and the no. of rotations one wheel makes
in this time.

Ex. 3

A fan turns at a rate of 900 rpm. (a) Find the angular speed
of any point on one of the fan blades. (b) Find the
tangential speed of the tip of the blade if the distance
from the center to the tip is 20 cm.

Ex. 4

A 2 kg rock has a horizontal velocity of magnitude 12 m/s

when it is at point P as in figure. At this instant what are
the magnitude and direction of angular momentum
relative to point O? If the only force acting on the rock is
its weight, what is the rate of change of its angular
momentum at this instant?

tangentially to the rim of a wheel with 20 cm radius. The wheel
has a moment of inertia of 30 kgm2. Find (a) the angular
acceleration (b) the angular speed after 4.0 s from rest, and (c)
the number of revolutions made in that 4.0 s. (d) Find the work
