Perineum
Is the area of smooth tissue found
between the vulva and the anus. This
area has many sensitive nerve endings
and is sensitive to touch it can play
a part in sexual excitement.
Opening of Vagina
The vagina starts at the opening
vulva and leads into the uterus. The
vagina is a tubular organ that serves
as a passageway from the uterus to
the outside of the body. It allows
menstrual flow to exit the uterus; it
receives the penis during intercourse
and serves as the birth canal during
childbirth.
Internal Anatomy
Uterus
Also known as the womb, it is a hollow,
muscular, pear-shaped organ. Hormones
influence the functioning of the uterus.
The uterus either prepares for the
implantation of an egg or receives the
signal that no fertilization has taken
place, therefore menstruation begins.
Endometrium
The inner lining of the uterus is called the
endometrium. The hormones act on this
lining to cause the above changes to
occur.
Ovaries:
The ovaries are almond shaped sized organs
suspended on either side of the uterus. The
ovaries produce the hormones, estrogen and
progesterone and house the immature eggs.
Fallopian Tubes:
Extending from the upper end of the uterus are
two flexible tubes called fallopian tubes. The
tubes do not touch the ovaries, but they catch
the eggs as they are released from the ovaries
during ovulation. The tubes are also the place
where the eggs and sperm meet and fertilization
takes place.
Cervix
The cervix is a small dome
situated in the rear of the vagina
that connects the uterus and the
vagina. The cervix can be very
small (cherry sized) in a woman
who has not had a baby. It has a
small hole in the centre that
menstrual fluids flow through and
where male ejaculation flows up.
Hymen
The hymen is a collar of tissue around the opening of the vagina. The vulva and
vagina are made from two different tissue types and the hymen is what connects
the two.
It is important to know that the hymen does not actually exist. What actually
exists is a fold of mucous membrane around the edges of the vaginas entrance,
and this is called the vaginal corona.
(Dina Rttigheter, n.d.)
There has been significant research on the hymen, with many mythical stories
about this part of female anatomy.
What can you see
about the
different vulvas
and internal
female anatomy?
