Initiation Phase

6
INITIATION PHASE
Project Initiation clarifies:
The Project Objectives.
What is needed to achieve these objectives.
It should answer the following questions: [3]

[3] http://www.free-management-ebooks.com/faqpm/processes-02.htm 7
1. The Initiation phase begins by defining the scope, purpose,
objectives, resources, deliverables, timescales and structure
of the project.
2. The next step is to develop a Business Case, including several
possible solutions and a cost/benefit analysis for each.
3. A Feasibility Study should then be carried out to ensure that
the chosen solution is feasible and has an acceptable level of
risk.
4. The next step is to define the Terms of Reference, followed by
the appointment of the project team.
5. The final step is to carry out Phase Review before seeking
approval to proceed. [4]

22
Closing Phase
Project Closure involves handing over
the deliverables to your customer,
passing the documentation to the
business, cancelling supplier contracts,
releasing staff and equipment, and
informing stakeholders of the closure
of the project [9].

After the project has been closed, a

Post Implementation Review is

Client: P.T. Newmont Nusa Tenggara
Location: Sumbawa, Indonesia

Project Title: PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara Batu Hijau Copper and Gold Mine EPC [8]

Challenges:
No infrastructure
A sparse and unskilled workforce
Amidst an economic and political turmoil.
Major design challenge was the availability of fresh water on the island to handle the
demands of the processing plant [8].

[11]: https://blog.masterofproject.com/project-closure-phase/ 28
Planning Solutions:
Using a multi-office execution approach and segregating the mega-project
into five manageable segments: port, power plant, concentrator, mine, and
township [8].
Fluor engineers designed and tested a seawater system to ensure that all
equipment used at the mine was compatible with the seawater conditions [8].
Provided extensive training to all workers, including safety orientation training
in both Bahasa Indonesian and English. Training centers were set up
throughout the project site and customized training sessions were provided for
the duration of the project [8].
Result:
Fluor delivered the Batu Hijau project to PTNNT one month ahead of schedule
and approximately $100 million under budget. The successful project
continues to exceed expectations [8].
The success of the project was due to the commitment and partnership
approach of both Fluor and PTNNT, and the successful planning and
monitoring exhibited throughout the project. 29
