Social development is about how children and
adults learn and change their behaviour so
that they can mix with others and fit into the
society and culture in which they live. This
can involve: considering the needs of others
such as, sharing; getting social acceptance,
adopting social behaviour and mixing with
people of their own age. It describes how
relationships are developed within and
outwith the family circle, their friends, peers,
working relationships.

and changes to the body as the child progresses from
the newborn through toddler-hood, to pre-school to

throughout their childhood and into adolescence,
adulthood and old age until death. Physical

excitement, jealousy, anger, and contentment and how
they understand these feelings, express them and cope
with them. Development of independence and self-esteem
are also part of emotional development.
