2
ENERGY STAR: Opportunities to Save
Energy in Buildings
Commercial properties in the US are responsible for nearly 20 percent of
both the nations energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
30 percent of energy consumed in commercial buildings is wasted
Reductions of 10 percent in energy use can be possible with little or no cost

3
ENERGY STAR Commercial Buildings
Program
Offers a strategic approach to energy and water management through out a
buildings life cycle from design to operations.
Enables building owners, managers, and tenants to save money and protect
the environment
Provides organizations with measurable information for commercial buildings
on energy savings and greenhouse gas emissions reductions
ENERGY STAR on a property = superior energy performance

4
ENERGY STAR Score
1-to-100 scale identifies how a property is performing relative to similar
buildings nationwide
Scoring models are derived from a statistically representative sample of the
national building population
Accounts for climate and operational characteristics are specific to each
property type: size, number of employees, weekly operating hours
Scores for existing buildings are based on actual billed energy consumption
not estimates or simulations
This applies to design projects (pre-construction), major renovations, and
existing buildings within ENERGY STARs Portfolio Manager tool

7
Green Building Rating Systems and
ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR certification is a stand alone certification verifying superior
energy performance in eligible buildings
U.S. green building rating systems cover many disciplines
They all use ENERGY STAR for Commercial Buildings as a key standard
within their energy performance categories

8
Why Do Green Building Rating Systems
Use ENERGY STAR?
Trusted standard for energy efficiency for over 20 years
Based on frequently updated data gathered in credible process with
transparent statistical method
Tools such as Portfolio Manager and Target Finder are no-cost, easy-to-use,
and universally accessible
Portfolio Manager normalizes data to account for:
Location/climate
Building occupancy counts
Hours of operation
Building user equipment -- and more

9
ENERGY STAR Tools:

Portfolio Manager, Target Finder,

and Sustainable Buildings Checklist

10
Portfolio Manager for Benchmarking
Existing Buildings
Portfolio Manager helps operations teams:
Benchmark the energy use of all properties
Compare one building against a national sample of similar properties
Track changes in energy and water use over time in a single building, groups
of buildings, or entire portfolios
Track and report cost savings and CO2 emissions
Set priorities for use of limited staff time and/or investment capital
Receive an energy use intensity (EUI) value for each property
Apply for the ENERGY STAR certification

http://www.energystar.gov/benchmark
11
Target Finder for Projects in Design Phase
Target Finder is part of the Portfolio Manager tool and can be used as a
stand-alone tool or energy performance calculator
Target Finder calculates:
Energy use intensity (EUI)
Absolute energy required to achieve goal
Energy costs and GHG emissions
Estimated Energy Star score (1-100) of design
Target Finder is the name used by LEED, Green Globes, and CHPS

Sustainable Buildings Checklist in Portfolio
Manager
The Sustainable Buildings Checklist helps Federal agencies:
Conduct initial and final building walkthrough assessments
Track and easily view progress on each guiding principle
Upload compliance documents to the repository for record keeping
Create a portfolio-wide federal building sustainability roll-up report
Review up-to-date energy and water metrics generated by Portfolio Manager

Energy Performance and Green Globes
New Construction
Green Globes provides four paths for assessing energy performance.
Path A, ENERGY STAR Target Finder, is worth a maximum of 100 points
Path C, ANSI/GBA 01-2010 Energy Performance Building Carbon Dioxide
Equivalent Emissions Reduction, uses Target Finder to establish a Baseline
Equivalent Emission Rate

Conclusion:
ENERGY STAR has resources to help you earn a LEED, Green Globes, or
CHPS recognition for building design and existing buildings
Target Finder can be used to support certifications related to both building
design and operations because it informs energy management early in the
design process and the setting energy management goals
Portfolio Manager can be used to gain certification related to both building
design and operations. Portfolio Manager is the leading tool to support utility
data tracking for operations and benchmarking for existing buildings
