1. Paradox: is a statement that contradicts
itself and still seems true somehow.
Examples Nobody goes to the restaurant
because it's too crowded."
2. Catastrophe:in literature, the final action
that completes the unraveling of the plot in
a play, especially in a tragedy.
Catastrophe is a synonym of denouement.

3. Foil: In literature, a foil is a character that shows
qualities that are in contrast with the qualities of
another character with the objective to highlight the
traits of the other character.
(Antigone and Ismene)
4. Crisis: The point in a narrative when the crucial
action, decision, or realization must be made.
Example: The Enterprise encounters the slime monster. It
attacks the ship. (Crisis!) Kirk kills it by freezing it.
(Resolution)

5. Pun: A pun is a play on words in which a humorous effect is
produced by using a word that suggests two or more meanings
or by exploiting similar sounding words having different
meanings.
Example: I really wanted a camouflage shirt, but I couldn't find
one.
6. Aside: happens when a character's dialogue is spoken but
not heard by the other actors on the stage. Asides are useful for
giving the audience special information about the other
characters onstage or the action of the plot.
Example: Making a snide comment about the teacher under your
breath.

7. Alliteration: is a literary device where two or
more words in a phrase or line of poetry share the
same beginning sound. The words can be adjacent or
can be separated by one or more words. Usually the
beginning consonants in the words are used for
the alliteration; but, sometimes the vowels in the
words are used.

8. Climax: a decisive moment that is of maximum
intensity or is a major turning point in a plot.

9. Symbolism: A figure of speech where an object,
person, or situation has another meaning other than its
literal meaning. The actions of a character, word, action,
or event that have a deeper meaning in the context of the
whole story.
Black is often used to symbolize death or evil
10. Allusion: is a figure of speech that refers to a well-
known story, event, person, or object in order to make a
comparison in the readers' minds.
When you feel betrayed by a friend, you can say, "You
too, Brutus?" (allusion to Julius Caesar-Brutus betrayed
Caesar)
