WHATS THE PROBLEMA ABOUT?
WOMAN ABUSE IS ANY USE OF
PSYCHOLOGICAL, PHYSICAL OR SEXUAL
FORCE, ACTUAL OR THREATENED, IN AN
INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP. INTIMATE
RELATIONSHIPS INCLUDE A CURRENT OR
FORMER SPOUSE, AND AN INTIMATE, OR
DATING PARTNER. VIOLENCE IS USED TO
INTIMIDATE, HUMILIATE OR FRIGHTEN VICTIMS,
OR TO MAKE THEM FEEL POWERLESS.
THE TERM 'WOMAN ABUSE' RECOGNIZES THAT
WOMEN ARE MOST OFTEN THE VICTIMS OF ABUSE
AND MEN ARE MOST OFTEN THE PERPETRATORS.
THE ABUSE MAY BE A SINGLE ACT, BUT MOST
OFTEN IT OCCURS IN A CONTEXT WHERE THERE IS
A PATTERN OF ASSAULTIVE AND CONTROLLING
BEHAVIOUR. THERE MAY BE A NUMBER OF ACTS
WHICH APPEAR MINOR WHEN VIEWED IN
ISOLATION, BUT COLLECTIVELY FORM A PATTERN
THAT AMOUNTS TO ABUSE.
Where is it located?
The Peruvian Constitution of 1993 recognized a person's
fundamental right to its moral, physical, and
psychological integrity. However, it didn't specifically
expand these protections to women, nor does it have
specific discrimination laws that apply to women.
The status and discriminations of women in Peru is
complex because it varies with class, ethnicity, and the
economic place of women in traditional Peruvian
society. Women who live in Peru have often been
involved in agricultural products as well as handicraft.
This complexity has often not been recognized by the
Peruvian government.
Where is it located?
Peruvian women fare differently than men -
experiencing higher rates of poverty, domestic
violence and sexual violence. According to the
World Health Organization, 49% of ever-
partnered women (women who had ever been
married, ever lived with a man or ever had a
regular sexual partner) in Lima and 61% in Cusco
reported physical violence by a partner at some
time in their life. For sexual violence by a partner
these percentages were 23% in Lima and 47% in
Cusco.
What is the background for the
problem?
In Per la violence against the woman has its roots in three
aspects.
- The social relations of male domination and female
subordination: some command more than others in society for
example the economic violence.
- The construction of unequal gender identities: feminine identities
are less valued than masculine identities.
- The sexual division of labor: women dedicated to family care
and responsibilities and men to women productive Jobs.
Abuse against women occurs in families of all socioeconomic,
educational and cultural backgrounds and is found in both rural
and urban settings.
What is the background for the
problem?

EMOTIONAL ABUSE:
Emotional abuse is: "any act including confinement,
isolation, verbal assault, humiliation, intimidation,
infantilization, or any other treatment which may diminish
the sense of identity, dignity, and self-worth is also known
as psychological abuse or as "chronic verbal aggression"
What is the background for the
problem?
STREET HARASSMENT
Street harassment is also known as catcalling. Catcalling
is defined as a whistle, shout, or a sexual move as a
person walks by another person.
According to Stop Street Harassment, street harassment
is "unwanted comments, gestures, and actions forced
on a stranger in a public place without their consent
and is directed at them because of their actual or
perceived sex, gender, gender expression, or sexual
orientation.
What is the background for the
problem?
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Domestic violence (also called intimate partner violence
(IPV), domestic abuse or relationship abuse) is a pattern
of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and
control over another partner in an intimate relationship.

SEXUAL VIOLENCE
Sexual violence is defined as a sexual act committed
against someone without that persons freely given
consent.
What are the causes and
consecuences for the problem?
The main manifestations of violence against
women are: personal injuries, abuse and sexual
harassment, prostitution, rape, kidnapping,
human trafficking, torture, violent death and
various forms of discrimination (exclusion or
limitation against women due to gender) that
affect and impair recognition and the legitimate
exercise of their rights. Gender-based violence
also directly affects girls: they are victims of
prenatal selection of sex, forced abortions and
infanticide.
Who is affected by it?
A recent study by Amnesty International and Flora Tristan, a Peruvian organization
that works to protect women, found that more than 300 women have been killed in
Peru by men committing sexual violence since 2003. It also found that 51 percent of
women in Lima and 69 percent of women in Cuzco said they have been the victims
of sexual or physical violence.
Women in Peru represent a minority in both numbers and legal rights. Although
historically somewhat equal to men, after the Spanish conquest the culture in what is
now Peru became increasingly patriarchal. The patriarchal culture is still noticeable.
Women receive less pay than men, have fewer employment and political
opportunities, and are at times abused without repercussion. Contraceptive
availability is not enough for the demand, and over a third of pregnancies end in
abortion. Maternal death rates are also some of the highest in South America.

Who or what organizations/agencies are responsibles for it?
Peruvian Government has begun efforts to combat the high
maternal mortality rate and lack of female political
representation, as well as violence against women. However, the
efforts have not yet borne fruit.

of feminism. of women.
Why is it important to resolve it?

Because as we know, this problem affects not only women, it also

affects their family, like their children, parents, etc. So we dont
have to wait that someone that we know has this problem to
begin to act. The change begins in oneself!
Why did we choose it?

We chose this problem because we have seen that in Peru there is a

lot of violence not only against women, but also against children, dogs,
etc. So we know that if we start to teach children to respect others, we
will see changes in our culture. And also we hope that people change
their mentality about violence and equal opportunities for all.
