IGNITION SYSTEM

Starts the combustion process close to the end of compression stroke

Electrical discharge is produced for every cycle depending upon ignition
timing of the engine
Conventional electrical ignition system is in much use and has two types
A) Battery ignition or Coil Ignition system
B) Magneto ignition system
IGNITION SYTEM REQUIREMENT
It should provide a good spark between the electrodes of the plugs at the
correct timing
The duration of the spark must be long enough with sufficient energy to
ensure that ignition of the mixture has a high chance of occurring
The system must distribute this high voltage to each of the spark plug at
exact time in every cycle , i.e., i t must have in it a distributing device
It should function efficiently over the entire range of engine speed
It should be light, effective and reliable in service
TYPES OF IGNITION SYSTEM
Battery Ignition System
Magneto Ignition System
BATTERY IGNITION SYSTEM
Its parts are:
Battery
Ignition Switch
Ballast resistor
Ignition coil
Contact Breaker
Condenser
Distributor
Construction of battery ignition system
NOTE: Ignition system is basically divided into primary (low voltage) and secondary
circuit(high voltage)

BIS AND MIS
BIS MIS

In BIS, even at low speed good spark is available In MIS, there is poor sparking at low speed

Starting the engine is easy Starting of the engine is not easy

If battery is discharged, it is difficult to start the engine As there is no battery, such difficulty does not arise

As there is battery, maintenance problems are As there is no battery, maintenance problems are less
considerable
This system is used in Cars, Buses and Trucks This system is used in motor cycles, scooters and racing
cars
TROUBLESHOOTING
1.Engine misfires on one cylinder:
Faulty spark plug, detached high tension cable, broken wires in cable
2.Engine misfires irregularly on all cylinders:
Dirt or dust on distributor or ignition coil
3.Engine does not start: There is also no spark from the coil:
Discharged battery, defective condenser or ignition coil
4.Engine gets unduly hot:
Incorrect timing
FIRING ORDER

Firing order indicates the sequence or order in which the

firing impulses occur in a multi-cylinder spark ignition engine.
It is chosen to give a uniform torque, and hence a uniform
distribution of firing per revolution of the engine.
This is naturally dictated by the engine design, the cylinder
arrangement and the crankshaft design. The firing order be
such that there must always be a proper balance so as to
minimize the engine Vibration.
Firing order of 4 cylinder In line engine
Common Firing order : 1,3,4,2

Reasons:
Increased Engine vibrations if 1,2,3,4
Overload Engine cooling system if 1,2,3,4
Increased Exhaust gases Back pressure if 1,2,3,4
