What is a Student

Apprenticeship
Program?
A Student Apprenticeship
Program

A systematic course training plan, carefully

designed to transfer relevant knowledge, skills,
and attitudes within a desired period of time
from an expert practitioner in a specific field of
study or profession to a novice student who
ideally has completed an academic program of
study.
A Student Apprenticeship
Program
Apprenticeship is also a professional relationship
between a student and an expert professional,
wherein the student is obliged to diligently obey and
learn from the expert professional. The expert
professional on the other hand is obliged to facilitate
the learning process by subjecting the apprentice to
a carefully planned program of informal instruction,
diverse set of meaningful work experiences, and a
fair assessment of learning outcomes through
practical tests.
A Student Apprenticeship
Program
An example is a travel agent
A travel agency executive provides basic training
to trainees on filling up necessary forms, how to
handle telephone and reception inquiries, and
making, amending, or cancelling a booking.
Student trainees get to apply everything learned
in school.
At the end of the apprenticeship program, the
student may be eligible to take some practical
tests for certification purposes and prepare him
for a good entry-level position in the travel trade
sector.
A Student Apprenticeship
Program
Apprenticeship can also be seen as an academic
relationship between a learning institution like a
technical high school, a college or university, a
training center, or special school and an
organization like a business enterprise, a
government agency, a religious organization, a
non-governmental organization, or another
learning institution.

Apprentice

The apprentice is expected to learn practical

experience in a work environment setting and a
spontaneous application in theories, concepts, and
principles learned in school with the end goal of
making the apprentice (student) better equipped
with professional competencies.
In some cases, the student apprenticeship program
provides a good preparation for the student who
intends to take a licensure examination.
Expert Trainer or Mentor
The expert trainer or mentor, who is ideally a role
model to the apprentice, must take seriously the student
apprenticeship program in order to produce a good
number of competent professionals in the next
generation.
In the hands of the expert trainer or mentor is the social
responsibility of providing this unique service to the
country and to the global community.
In some instances, supervising expert trainers tend to
make student apprentices perform menial tasks,
including personal favors that have nothing to do with
the desired competencies to be acquired by the
apprentice in the program.
Apprenticeship Coordinator
or Practicum Coordinator
The apprenticeship coordinator or practicum
coordinator is a teacher assigned to supervise the
training program of the student or the students.
Ideally, this teacher is qualified and familiar with
the work environment of the profession. It would be
difficult for somebody who is not qualified to check
on the students progress in the internship.
There are also laws that only qualified professionals
can supervise apprentices, practicumers or on-the-
job trainees
Apprenticeship
Agreement
The apprenticeship agreement is a formal
written document designed to outline
comprehensively the responsibilities of all parties to
the student apprenticeship program.
In some cases, the parent or guardian of the
students also signs in a memorandum of agreement.
In some schools, a separate document called
Statement of Co-Responsibility is prepared for the
parent or guardian to sign.
