INTRODUCTI
What is
puberty
Puberty is described as a time in life
when the body matures sexually and
the reproductive organs become
functional.
This means they become capable of
making babies.

4
Puberty vs
adolescence
Puberty refers to the bodily changes,
while adolescence is the period of
psychological and social transition between
childhood and adulthood.

5
How does this
happen
Long before any outward changes happen, special
hormones begin to be reproduced inside the bodies
of both girls and boys.

6
These
hormones
affect many
different
things
Including sexual
development and growth

7
Gonadotropin-releasing hormones
Released by the hypothalamus to send signals to the
anterior pituitary gland to secrete two gonadotropins LH
and FSH

The Luteinizing Hormones

Hormone that triggers ovulation and is responsible for the

hormones
secretion of progesterone in girls and testosterone in boys.

Follicle Stimulating Hormones

Hormone that helps control the menstrual cycle and develop
egg follicles for ovulation. It is responsible for the secretion
of estrogen in females and spermatogenesis in males.

Characteristics of
puberty is an overlapping
period
Puberty must be regarded as an overlapping period because it
encompasses the closing years of childhood and the beginning years of
adolescence. Before they are sexually mature, children are known as
pubescents or pubescent children. After they become sexually mature,
they are known as adolescents or young adolescents.

Puberty is a relatively short period, lasting from two to four years. Children
who pass through puberty in two years or less are regarded as rapid
maturers while those who require three or four years to complete the
transformation into adults are regarded as slow maturers.

cases to unfavorable behavior.

20
Puberty is a
negative phase
According to Charlotte Buhler, negative attitudes of pubescent children are
characteristic mainly of the early part of puberty.

There is also evidence that the behavior characteristic of the negative phase
is more pronounced in girls than in boys.

Interesting
Today girls face puberty earlier. In the
1900s girls began puberty when they
were 15, in the 1990s girls began puberty
when they were 12 today girls begin
puberty at age 10.
Early
puberty in
girls
Studies of young girls indicate that those
who develop early are more likely to be
depressed, aggressive, socially
withdrawn, and moody.

Studies of teens indicate that girls who

developed early are more likely to be
sexually active, have more problems in
school, and are more likely to smoke and
use alcohol and drugs

25
A study from Denmark found that the
mean age of testicular enlargement in
boys declined from age 11.92 years to
11.66 years between 1991-1993 and
2006-2008, suggesting that more boys
may be starting puberty before age 9
years.
Early
puberty in
boys
Some boys become more aggressive than their
peers and develop a sex drive...Boys often have a
hard time paying attention in school and getting
along with other children their age. They may feel
more comfortable around older children, but are not
mature enough emotionally to be accepted by them.
