HISTORY
Ifugao (Ilocano: Probinsia ti Ifugao; Filipino: Lalawigan ng Ifugao)
It is a landlocked province of the Philippines in the Cordillera
Administrative Region in Luzon
Its capital is Lagawe and it borders Benguet to the west, Mountain
Province to the north, Isabela to the east, and Nueva Vizcaya to the south
The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras and Banaue Rice
Terraces are the main tourist attractions in the province. These terraces
were hand-carved into the mountains 2,000 years ago to plant rice. In 1995,
they were declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

HISTORY
Ifugao houses were usually similar in architectural designs but
they differ in decorative details depending on the tribes
Their houses were harmoniously located with the contour of the
rice terraces
One-room house of the Ifugao commonly know to them as fale
The exterior of the house seems to be nothing but a pyramid
resting on four posts, while the interior space is enclosed by
slanting walls and ceiling that appears to be spherical that are
formed by the loft

FUNCTIONAL LEVELS
Ifugao House have three functional levels:
Ground levels
- the posts have wooden discs which was called oliang to
prevent rats from entering the house

Second Level or Living Area

- social affairs, eating, cooking and sleeping are all done in
this area

Third Level
- the patie, it is a shelf that extends from the wallboards
outwards to the underside of the roof

Enclosed structure which is square in plan
Rests 2.00 meters high on four tree trunks as columns
Contains a single room having an area of 4x5 meters
Interior space is used for cooking and sleeping
Fire place is located at the far right hand corner of the
house
Shelves above the fireplace is provided for the storage of
palay and firewood
Floor is about 1.50 meters or 2.00 meters above the ground
made of wooden planks resting on solid floor joists which
overhang the floor

STRUCTURAL
Post are buried into a hole dug about half meter into the ground
and are further secured by means of stones placed on each
stones
Floor girders are carved with mortises on both ends to fit into
the pointed upper end of the posts which act as the tenons
Lower part of the waliboards are mortised into the floor joist
while the upper part are rabbeted above into a transverse beam
Roof is pyramidal covered with reed and grass
Roof framing is made up of rafters resting on a brace above in
which in turn is supported by a kingpost
At the apex of the roof, the grass covering is made loose in order
to allow the escape of smoke coming from the kitchen area

DECORATIVE ELEMENTS
Carabaos skulls and pigs jaw are used
as indication of status and keeping
peace with the Gods
Ambubulan figure form placed on top
of the roof is used as a protection
against evil spirits and lightning and as
a sign of asking a favour from the god
Kabunyan
These symbolic items rather than the
size of his house are used as induations
of the Ifugaos wealth

Quotations are commonly printed
as a means of inspiration and to
invoke philosophical thoughts from
the reader.
