The dakwah movement
spread ideas through these
channels (rq 1)
Books
When I first got into IIUM (AIKOL) that was the first time I
joined usrah and read mathurat. In the usrah we referred to
a book titled Kenapa saya masuk Islam written by Fatiya
Khan. And most of the naqibs and naqibahs were members of
ABIM and ARQAM. I also started to know about Syed Qutb
when I was in high school (1984) and read the Syed Qutbs
book after my SPM (1986).
R2

Masa umi sekolah aljunied, kita baca mathurat and

matan arbain (hadis 40). Ustaz yang mengajar tu
semua keluaran Al azhar masa tu. (R5 was 17 years
old)

R3
Time tu tahun 1971, di Seremban, abah dapat tahu tentang Al-
Arqam ni melalui terbitan buku Arqam iaitu Aurad
Muhammadiyah dan berita tv 1. Mereka ni tak berapa campur
dengan orang kalau tak join movement mereka, dia tak nak share
info dgn kita. Dia bergerak dalam kumpulan dia dan terlalu
mengikut perintah ketua dia, Ashaari Muhammad.

ABIM were the first yang memperkenalkan usrah pada ketika itu. The
Charted. ABIM ada mewujudkan Dewan Pustaka Islam and translate lot
of books from Arabic to BM. Arabic to English. R6
Ceramah
Tahun 1971, abah tahu tentang ABIM melalui surat khabar Utusan
Melayu, Mereka ni okay sebab banyak tolong dalam membela nasib
belia Islam dan tolong orang masuk Islam. Mereka berdakwah
melalui ceramah, mengadakan perjumpaan dengan belia dan
mengeluarkan risalah dan majalah. (R1 was 17 years old)

I remember in 1979 (standard 3), Anwar Ibrahim whom at that time was the
President of ABIM came to my hometown in Jasin, Melaka to deliver his
speech. From what I remember, the mosque was full with people. All of them
wanted to meet Anwar. During 1980s Arqam were trying promote their
muslim friendly product.

R2
Tahun 1981, Masa itu umi pernah pergi markas arqam kat
johor. Kawan ajak umi. Tak fikir apa pun, sebab dorang buat
usrah, camping belajar agama. Lepas ikut berapa kelas umi
tak ikut lagi sebab tak kena dengan cara umi. (Everyone
wears black).

R3
The most active Islamic movement in my area during the 70s
was Pergerakan Dakwah Islamiah. Pengikut parti tersebut
kebanyakannya tabligh, so they send them out to a number of
kampungs in my area to preach about Islam, ceramah about 3-
4 times a year that consists of dakwah and forums.

In 1976 I was still in primary school, and once year the

coalition of PAS/UMNO would organize a rally in my
school (SK Permatang Tok Jaya) to spread knowledge R4
about Islam and their political party (Barisan Nasional),
and usually students would have their parents during
the rally.

One of ABIM members made his appearance in R1

television, Ustaz Nikmat Yusuf, dapat peluang berucap
dalam majlis Tilawatul Quran peringkat Kebangsaan
terpilih menyampaikan ceramah selama setengah jam.

R6
MEDIA DURING ISLAMIC RESURGENCE IN MALAYSIA

Radios like RTM & Radio Malaya would have Islamic talks and
nasyid every morning, especially when people are getting ready to
go to work/school. Newspapers like Utusan Malaysia (written in
jawi back then) would have a column on Islam that would have
excerpts of dakwahs from different ustaz.

R5
Reaction to Dakwah movement (RQ 2)
There was one day, I listened to young Anwar Ibrahims speech
about Islam when I was 19 (1971, Anwar was the member of the
organisation). To me this is one important organisation that lead
the resurgence of this country. If you read any literature about
Islamic Resurgence, semua orang mengakui bahawa it was ABIM
who started the resurgence.

R6
Abah baca risalah ABIM tu sebab boleh katakan ABIM ni
bawa ideology yang bagus untuk spread tentang Islam
ni. The risalah is good in context because it helps the
belia to know more about the dakwah movement.

R1
Since ABIM consist of young intellectual people, papa sedar
bahawa intellectuality itu penting untuk mencapai
matlamat, dalam konteks ABIM ; menggerakkan dakwah
dalam Malaysia.

R2
Dakwah was very crucial - especially for the younger generation as
they needed the Islamic knowlege from credible scholars from
institutions like Al-Azhar. During the time ABIM was active, PAS
and UMNO joined forces in spreading knowledge. I was involved in a
lot of the gatherings as our parents would bring the whole family
along.

R4
Dakwah was well received in our area because activities like
rallies or ceramah were considered as strengthening the
bond of the community. Radio and newspapers played a huge
role in spreading the dakwah and I myself have learned and
passed down the stories or Hadith to my children. I would
hardly miss the ceramahs held in my area as we went as a
family and the neighboring families too would go as well.

R5
CONCLUSION
People during 1970s-1980s received information
of dakwah from various channels which are
books, ceramah, newspaper, magazine,
television channel and radio.

It can be seen clearly that the responses

towards dakwah movement leaning more on
positive rather than negative responses
because it helps to enlighten the view of Islam
