What is UNIX?
UNIX is an operating system which was first developed in
the 1960s, and has been under constant development
ever since. By operating system, we mean the suite of
programs which make the computer work. It is a stable,
multi-user, multi-tasking system for servers, desktops and
laptops.
UNIX systems also have a graphical user interface (GUI)
similar to Microsoft Windows which provides an easy to
use environment.
It is created by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, in
1969.
Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie (September 9, 1941
c. October 12, 2011) was an American computer
scientist.He created the C programming
language and, with long-time colleague Ken
Thompson, the Unix operating system Thompson

Linux
Linux is a Unix-like computer Operating System that uses
the Linux kernel.
Linux started out as a personal computer system used by
individuals, and has gained the support of several large
corporations, such Sun Microsystems, HP and IBM.
It is now used mostly as a server operating system
It is open-source
Who created Linux?
Linux is an operating system or a kernel which germinated
as an idea in the mind of young and bright Linus
Torvalds when he was a computer science student. He
used to work on the UNIX OS (proprietary software) and
thought that it needed improvements
Linus Benedict Torvalds born December 28, 1969) is
a Finnish-American software engineer who is the
creator, and for a long time, principal developer of
the Linux kernel, which became the kernel for
operating systems such as the Linux operating system
, Android, and Chrome OS.
Why LINUX?
Being open-source, anyone with programming knowledge can
modify it.
The Linux operating systems now offer millions of
programs/applications to choose from, most of them free!
Once you have Linux installed you no longer need an antivirus!
Linux is a highly secure system. More so, there is a global
development community constantly looking at ways to enhance
its security. With each upgrade, the OS becomes more secure
and robust
Linux is the OS of choice for Server environments due to its
stability and reliability (Mega-companies like Amazon, Facebook,
and Google use Linux for their Servers). A Linux based server
could run non-stop without a reboot for years on end.
Components of Linux System

Linux Operating System has primarily three components

Kernel
System Library
System Utility
What is Kernel?
Kernel
Kernel is the core part of Linux.
It is responsible for all major activities of this operating
system. It consists of various modules and it interacts
directly with the underlying hardware.
The kernel is the core of an operating system: it
manages communication between devices and
software, manages the system resources (like CPU
time, memory, network,device management,
process...)
What is System Library?
System Library
The system libraries contain program methods for
developers to write software for the operating system.
The libraries contain methods for process creation and
manipulation, file handling, network programming, etc. It is
a vital part of an operating system because you can't (or
shouldn't) communicate with the kernel directly: the library
shields off the complexity of kernel programming for the
system programmer.
The most well-known system library for Linux systems is
the GNU C Library, also known as glibc.
GNU is a recursive acronym that stands for GNU is Not
Unix, because it is Unix-like but contains no Unix code and
is (and remains) free.
What is System Utility?
System Utility

System Utility programs are responsible to do

specialized, individual level tasks.
The system tools are built using the system libraries
and enable administrators to administer the system:
manage processes, navigate on the file system, execute
other applications, configure the network, ...

What is LINUX?
What is distribution?
Linux has a number of different versions to suit nearly any
type of user.
From new users to hard-core users, youll find a flavor of
Linux to match your needs.
These versions are called distributions (or, in the short
form, distros.) Nearly every distribution of Linux can be
downloaded for free, burned onto disk (or USB thumb
drive), and installed (on as many machines as you like).
There are hundreds of Linux operating systems or
Distributions available these days. Many of them are
designed with a specific purpose in mind. For example, to
run a web server or to run on network switches like
routers, modems, etc.
The latest example of one of the most popular
smartphone-based Linux Distribution is Android!
The most popular Linux
distributions are:

Ubuntu Linux
Linux Mint
Arch Linux
Deepin
Fedora
Debian
openSUSE.

Server Distributions
Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Ubuntu Server
CentOS
SUSE Enterprise Linux.
