HIV/AIDS

BY ESSENCE SMITH, SHANINA JACKSON, AND NICOLE SMITH

INTRODUCTION

HIV stands for human

immunodeficiency virus
AIDS stands for acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome
HIV is a
virus that attacks the immune system
The stages are: (stage
1.Acute HIV Infection, stage 2.
HIV Inactivity, stage 3.AIDS)
ORIGIN

HIV is said to be a derivative of the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV), which

attacks the immune systems of monkeys and apes
The first verified case of HIV is from a man in the Democratic Republic of Congo in
1959
Scientists used DNA samples to trace the first transmission of SIV to HIV back to
the 1920s in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo
WHO IS AFFECTED BY IT? (AGE, ETHNICITY, REGION)

Sub-Saharan Africa is the most affected

accounting for about 64%.
Other regions significantly affected by
HIV and AIDS include Asia and the
Pacific, Latin America and the
Caribbean, and Eastern Europe and
Central Asia.
TRENDS
HOW?

TRUE FALSE
Sexual contact with someone that is Hugging, shaking hands, sharing utensils
infected (anal or vaginal) Saliva, tears, or sweat that is not mixed
Sharing needles for injections with the blood of an HIV-positive
Mother to child
individual
Mosquitos, or any other blood sucking
insects
Airborne
SYMPTOMS
40%-90% of people have flu-like
symptoms within 2-4 weeks after HIV
infection
Flu-like symptoms can include:
There are no reliable symptoms for Fever
HIV/AIDS Chills
Rash
Night sweats
Muscle aches
Sore throat
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

Prevention of contraction
- Being abstinent/ having fewer partners
- Get tested frequently and encourage your partner to do so as well
- Use condoms with lube (that includes for oral, vaginal, and anal sex)
- Use clean needles, prevents one from infected blood
- PrEP, PEP

Treatment
- Antiretroviral therapy
FUTURE RESEARCH

Sub-Saharan would benefit from future

research
Stem Cell Transplantation from a donor
with two pair of CCR5 delta-32
mutation.
Using bone marrow transplant.
Successful rate in stopping replication
of HIV virus.
Reconstitution of CD4 T-cells

CONCLUSION
HIV/AIDS are viruses that attack and weaken the body's immune system.
The virus happens in three stages and if not treated, it could lead to death.
HIV/AIDS are still the world's most health challenges since 1981.
Scientists' think HIV was transmitted to humans by Chimpanzees from Central Africa.
Most in need of medical help are the Sub-Saharan Africans. They could use the advance
studies, treatments, and preventative education. Over 2/3 of their population have HIV.
Protect yourself from these viruses by getting tested, using condoms, reducing sex
partners, and get treatment.
