2. By using mirrors.
PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS
Photovoltaic cells are used to convert sunlight
energy into electrical energy or into electrical
current. These are made up of silicon (a
semi- conductor) which absorbs the solar
energy and provides electrical energy.
But these are very expensive to
purchase and cannot solve our energy problem
due to high cost.
MIRRORS
Many number of Mirrors are used to focus the
sunlight into a particular point and use the
generated heat to produce electrical energy ,
which may be by heating water into a pipe and
using the high pressure of vapour to generate
electricity and some other ways.
Big Mirrors are used to concentrate the
sunlight . This method is less costly as compared to
previous one but large no. of mirrors are used
to generate adequate amount of heat.
HOW TO MAKE IT LESS COSTLY
An another method to generate electrical
power from solar is by using both mirrors and
photovoltaic cells called CPV (concentrated
photovoltaic method) . It can be done by using
many mirrors and concentrating the light on a
small photovoltaic cell , thus from here we
can get electrical energy more efficiently.
Unfortunately still its cost is very high or
domestic use and hence solar power cant be
used at large extent.
ADVANTAGES OF SOLAR POWER
There are many advantages of solar energy like
1. It is free energy, we have to expend only once ,
and also maintenance is also not much.
2. There is no need to transmit the solar electrical
power , we can get it wherever we want it.
3. We can set the photovoltaic cells on the top of
roofs of our houses if we have to power our
homes.
4. Solar energy is pollution less , unlimited and
free.
DISADVANTAGES OF SOLAR POWER
1. Solar panels are very expensive to use domestically.
2. Solar panels can provide electricity only in day time ,
at night we have to use another power source.
3. In a very effitient panel Only 46% of whole light falling
on panel converts in electrical energy i.e. 54% light
wasting .
4. In commercial panels only 15% to 16% of all light is
converted into electricity .
5. Solar panels generate only D.C. Current so a
converter is always required.
