Racism: Overcoming a moral catastrophe within
educational settings
Rationale
Schools have the ability to influence the opinions and
behaviors of children in their care; due to this reason it
is important that schools encourage an inclusive
atmosphere. Racism is unfortunately an ongoing issue
in schools despite inclusion and bullying policies already
in place, and will continue to be a barrier to learning and
inclusion if precautions/strategies are not administrated
(Welsh Assembly Government, 2004). A history of
segregation and miss-understanding has lead to the
fear of physical difference between individuals but
perceptions can be changed with intervention
(Fredrickson, 2015).

A childs parents hold a great influence over their children and is possible
that the children will mimic behavior and attitudes witnessed at home,
including negativity towards those from a different race.
Practitioners prejudice?
Context can create a rise in prejudice and racist acts; an example of
contextual racism includes ISIS. The threats that ISIS have made regarding
immigrants have lead people to resent those allowed into the UK.
Immigrant children within the classroom may be segregated by teaching
staff due to their low ability, not only will the children be unfamiliar but will
also draw attention with the additional learning aids.
Some people believe that ISIS terrorist groups create the
illusion that all Muslims are terrorists. From this fear, people
may stereotype the Muslim community seeing a turban, hijab
or darker skin as a negative connotation.
