A.4 The student will solve multistep linear and quadratic equations in two
variables, including:
a) solving literal equations (formulas) for a given variable;
b) justifying steps used in simplifying expressions and solving equations, using field
properties and axioms of equality that are valid for the set of real numbers and
its subsets;
c) solving quadratic equations algebraically and graphically;
d) solving multistep linear equations algebraically and graphically;
e) solving systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically and
graphically;
f) solving real-world problems involving equations and systems of equations.
Graphing calculators will be used both as a primary tool in solving problems and
to verify algebraic solutions.

Linear Equations. Engageny, Common

ource/attachments/math-g8-m4-
teacher-materials.pdf.4 where it involves
solving linear equations. It slowly scaffolds
the concept by using all constants and
transforms them in to letters and then uses
variables with constants to solve for. Even
though this feels like a textbook, it does a
great job of connecting prior knowledge
to what the students are being taught
here.

In this article made by Math Gains, it goes over the
many ways on how algebra tiles can be used. It lists
different ways on how to model quadratic and linear
equations and also provides practice for the students
in both Algebra I and Algebra II courses. Chapters 8-
15 deal with algebra and include like simplifying
expressions, adding/subtracting expressions, and
factoring polynomials.

ALGEBRA I (TEXTBOOK)
Burger, E. B., Holt McDougal., &
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing
Company. (2012). Holt McDougal
algebra 1. Orlando, Fla: Holt
McDougal/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
This is a textbook that is administered to
Algebra I students and includes all
standards of Algebra in this book. It
illustrates examples, goes through
solutions step-by-step. The book also
gives students an opportunity to
practice problems and prepare for the
SOLs.

This foldable takes kids in a step-by-step
process in solving linear equations. They
must ask themselves a question and if the
problem they are solving is applicable to
the question or not, they can flip either
the yes or no tab and will have an
explanation on what to do. This is a very
useful study guide and could also be
made into a flow chart.

In this video, Sal Khan goes over how
equations can be graphed by looking at
the slope and the y-intercept of both
equations which are in slope-intercept
form. The video also goes over how to
find the intersection of two lines and how
it is represented. This gives students a
better visual on how an equation is
graphed and what these equations differ
or are similar graphically.

This video illustrates a real world
example in which we would need to
solve a linear equation. We see an
illustrated story along with a walk-
through of how we can approach this
problem algebraically. It provides
humor and is easy to follow and makes
the material easier to understand.

Even though this is an Algebra topic, this
book gives illustrations that make it seem
like a childrens book. With that sort of
innocence in this book, it makes the
material seem much easier than it really is
which gives students a little bit more
confidence in finding the answer. This
book goes over both the elimination and
substitution methods in solving the system
of linear equations presented in the
problem.

SOLVING LITERAL EQUATIONS

(PURPLE MATH)
Stapel, Elizabeth. (2016) "Solving Literal
Equations." Purplemath. Available from
http://www.purplemath.com/modules/
solvelit.htm. Accessed 31 October 2017
This site goes over solving for variables in
formulas. Given a formula with different
represented variables, you can solve for a
variable in terms of the other variables for
example, solving for w in the perimeter
formula P = lw. If given values for all
variables except for one of them, you
can then solve for the unknown variable
by solving a multi-step linear equation.

This source is a continuation on solving systems
of linear equations with the use of substitution.
It provides both a step-by-step process on
answering a problem and another problem
accompanied with a video of the step-by-step
process. Some students learn better on their
own and others learn better with
instruction/guidance along with voice so that
they can follow along and model.

many different perspectives of people
