THIRD QUARTER

ACTIVITY
THE CARTESIAN
COORDINATE
PLANE
The Rectangular or Cartesian Coordinate System named in honor of the
seventeenth-century French mathematician and philosopher Rene
Descartes.

A coordinate plane is determined by two perpendicular number lines that

intersect at a point called the origin. The horizontal number line is called the
x-axis and the vertical number line is called the y-axis. Notice that the x-axis
and y-axis divide the plane into four regions called quadrants.

HOW TO PLOT POINTS IN A PLANE?
In order to plot a point in a plane, we must
know the perpendicular distance of the point from each
axis and also whether it is above or below the horizontal
axis and whether it is right or left of the vertical axis.

For example, plot the points:

A(-4,2) AND B(5,0)
PLOTTING POINT A:

FIRST, DETERMINE THE QUADRANT WHERE YOU CAN FIND THE

COORDINATES (-4,2).

Point A (-4,2) lies on quadrant 2, which has (-,+)

signs of ordered pairs.

Next, plot the point:

The x-intercept is -4 and the y-

intercept is 2. So basically, from
the origin count up to 4 to the left
side then count up to 2 above.
Then, you can finally determine
where point A is located.
PLOTTING POINT B:

What if your given coordinates are (5,0)? The y-

intercept is o, where do you think it lies?
The x-intercept is 5, Click icon to
basically from the origin add picture
count up to 5 to the right
side.
Since your y-intercept is 0,
you will not move neither
above nor below the axis.
Point B lies on the x-axis.
THE SLOPE OF THE
LINE
WHAT IS THE SLOPE OF LINE?

The slope is said to be the steepness of a line. It

is defined as the ratio of rise or vertical change,
to the run or horizontal change.
For a nonvertical line passing through P1 (x1,y1)
and P2 (x2,y2),the slope of the line is

m=y2-y1/x2-x1
EXAMPLE:

Find the slope of the line passing

through points A (0,1) and B (2,5).
Let: (x1,y1)= (0,1) (x2,y2)= (2,5)
Substitute the given values.

m= 5-1/2-0
m=4/2 Simplify.

m= 2
The slope is positive so the line rises to the right.
FINDING THE
EQUATION OF THE
LINE
-A linear equation of x and y represents a
straight line called the general form of the
equation of the line written as: Ax=By= C.

Find the equation of a line given:

> Two points
> Slope and a point
> Slope and y-intercept
> Intercepts
FINDING THE SLOPE
OF THE LINE USING
THE TWO-POINT
FORM
- If two points on the line are given, let
one point be (x1,y1) and the other
point (x2,y2). The two point form of the
linear equation is

y-y1=y2-y1/x2-x1 (x-x1)
EXAMPLE #1:

Find the equation of

the line passing through points
(5,8) and (3,4).
SOLUTION:

Let (5,8) be (x1,y1) and (3,4) be

(x2,y2). Substitute the given values.

y-8=4-8/3-5 (x-5)
y-8= -4/-2 (x-5)
y-8= 2(x-5) Lowest term.
y-8= 2x-10 Distributive property.

-2x +y= -10+8 Simplify.

Answer:

2x-y=2 Equation of the

line.
FINDING THE EQUATION
OF THE LINE USING THE
POINT-SLOPE FORM
- A line with a slope m and passing through
a point (x,y) has an equation like this:

y-y1=m(x-x1)
EXAMPLE:

Find the equation of the line

whose slope is 2 and passes
through the point (-1,3).
SOLUTION:

Given slope= 2 and passes through the

point (-1,3) where x1= -1 and y1=3. Substituting to:
y-y1=m(x-x1)

y-3= 2 [x-(-1)] y-3=

2(x+1)
y-3= 2x+2 Distributive
property.
-2x+y=2+3 -2x+y= 5
Answer:

2x-y= -5 Equation of the

line.
FINDING EQUATION OF
THE LINE USING THE
SLOPE-INTERCEPT FORM
-If the linear equation is in the form y=mx+b,
we know that m is the slope of a line and the
constant b is the y-intercept. This slope-intercept
form allows us to obtain the equation of the line
when we know the slope and its y-intercept.
EXAMPLE:

Find the equation of a line

with slope 2/3 and y-intercept 5.
Using the slope-intercept form, y=mx+b
substitute the given values:

y=2/3x + 5
y=2/3x + 5
3[y=2/3x + 5]3 Multiply both sides by
3.

3y=2x + 15
-2x +3y= 15
Answer:

2x-3y= -15 Equation of the

line.
FINDING THE
EQUATION OF THE LINE
USING THE INTERCEPT
FORM
-The intercept form of a linear equation
is x/a + y/b= 1, where (a,0) is the x-
intercept and (0,b) is the y-intercept of
the line.
EXAMPLE:

Find the equation of the line with

x-intercept 2 and y-intercept 3.
Using the intercept form, substitute the
given values.

x/2 + y/3= 1

(2)(3)[x/2+y/3=1](3)(2) Multiply both sides by 2 and 3.

Answer:

3x+2y= 6 Equation of the

line.
