What is Auteur Theory

Auteur theory is the theory that directors are the driving creative force
behind film, controlling every aspect behind the film process. People have
argued that auteur theory is like a lens for looking at cinema in the directors
vision.
It started in France late 1940s and the French translation for auteur is
author, but the term is believed to come from the french film journal
Cahiers du Cinma, within this journal the article A certain tendency of
French Cinema was a major influence for Auteur theory.

Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki is a Japanese film director, producer, screenwriter,

animator, author and manga artist.
He is known as the Japanese Walt Disney due to his unique style of
animation and directing style. He is a co-owner of the world famous studio
Ghibli and has directed the majority of the studios films

Doesnt work with scripts

Doesnt have the story finished by the time production starts.
Does what he feels is right in the moment.
Mainly works with storyboards creating them throughout the production.
Never studied screen writing.

Everything is hand drawn

Works 10 hour days and sometimes even more than that.

This has gained him respect from his staff and others in the media.
Miyazaki Early Life

He was born in Tokyo on january 5th, 1941 and he started his career by
becoming an animator at the studio Toei Animation in 1963. He grew up when
Japan was recovering from the damage done during the second world war.
His father was a aeronautical engineer and this added to Miyazakis fascination
with aero planes and them becoming prominent in his works. While his father
worked on aero planes there were war planes and this lead Miyazaki to express
guilt later on in life.
The movie Miyazaki claims to have stirred his love for animated movies and
pushed him into the career was a movie called Hakujaden (Legend of the
White Snake) which was japans first colored feature-length animated movie.
The studio who created the film was Toei animation who he would end up
working for, he rose the ranks quickly becoming the director of many animated
films before moving on to create his own studio.
